Soccer lacks attention? That's fine with me (http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2003-11-16-lipsyte_x.htm)

I can't decide if it's a good or a bad article. I guess it's good for soccer in the US, but it's denial that anybody really wants or needs a pro league here is a shame, especially as I think we're doing really well these days.

After the second 'miraculous' win in San Jose in two weeks, we were wandering around the stadium, kind of deliriously, Saturday night. We wandered over to the crowd of 300 - 400 or so mostly young people getting autographs from the players. There was lots of love everywhere.

My friend said to me -- "Let's enjoy this while we can. In a couple of years we won't be able to get tickets."

I have to agree. MLS, for all its problems, is really at a sweet stage right now. It's kind of like minor league for-the-love-of-it baseball as opposed to major league mercenary baseball.

We were noticing the average age of the fans in attendance was about 20. Tons of kids, all with huge smiles on their faces. Well, I went to a couple of S.F. Giants games this year, and the average age was about closer to 50. What do you think is going to happen in 20 years? Or even 5 years?

Our fans will be getting their first driver's license or their first partnership at the law firm.

Baseball's fans will be adjusting to life on social security and checking into assisted living quarters. (I had written something darker but you get the picture.)

It's already happening. There's no way MLS won't be truly big time in 10 years. And at least here in San Jose we'll be looking back at the good old days.
