Since naming the team Chivas outright has ruffled a lot of feathers (Chivas purists, and Americans who don't want to copy Mexican soccer), does anyone think that the name for the MLS team will possibly be Club Deportivo San Diego (or San Diego Sports Club? There's tons of Club Deportivos all over Latin America, so it wouldn't be insulting to the Mexican/Chivas fans who don't want the (Chivas) name to be diluted. And since all this publicity has been stirred, the Chivas nickname will stick anyway whether it is official or not. So those who want to call them Chivas can, and those who don't, don't have to. Not only that, but it would be even more authentic since the real Guadalajara team doesn't have Chivas in their nickname anyway.

Of course with that said, San Diego Sports Club sounds really dumb.

Club Deportivo... I like it. And w/ Deportivo La Corunya coming this summer, it would provide an appropriate context.

Stop giving solutions! That's soooo non-BS. ;)

Club Deportivo San Diego doesn't signify anything. It's bland and non-descriptive. Obviously Vergara is going to want to exploit the link to Chivas.

Club Deportivo de San Diego might not signify anything (besides "hi, this name is a knock-off of the one in Guadalajara"), but it's a hell of alot better than "Chivas USA". And San Diego Armada, too, for that matter. The man's spending good green money to buy an MLS team. If he wants it to have a Latin flavor, so be it. Just, please have the city name in the title.

Whatever... just so long as they land here in America's finest city.

Just to clarify, I don't like what I suggested (well how it sounds in English anyway), I was just saying that they could do this and exploit the Chivas brand without potentially pissing off real Chivas fans.

If I could chose, there would be only one name for San Diego, a name that has represented soccer for 20 years (a dumb one too, but it means something to soccer in San Diego): San Diego Sockers

but if the owner wants to call them San Diego Chivas, then it's alright...it doesn't sound that bad.

No need to have the city name in the title in my opinion. MetroStars, sounds WAY better than "NY/NJ MetroStars".

Yeah, but if they just picked one of NY or NJ, it would sound OK as well. I mean, everyone knows the Giants and Jets play in Jersey, but they're still the New York Giants/Jets. Same thing with the Washington Redskins playing in Maryland.
