Pernambuca... Juninho Pernambuca. http://www.soccernet.com/championsleague/news/2002/1021/20021021lyon.html

He is finally getting some time at Lyon - I remember last season I thought that he sucked with them. But now it looks like he is into a far more offensive mold with the club whereas before with Vasco he fell behind Paulista.

Hopefully he will continue to improve and be on the radar for Selecao friendlies again...

I really like this player, he's got 7 goals in le championnat this year, second top scorer.
Lyon have a very strong midfeild and playing time is spreaded out between Carriere, Dhorasso and Junihho.

Oh yeah ,he definitely world class.I can understand why Scolari didn't take him to the WC,May be because he wasn't very good at Copa America in 2001.But he will be going in the next one.

Do not bet on it - he is probably one of those players we willlook back on and say that how come he played so few time for Brazil? We do that in England with Hoddle - and he played 53 times!!

I thought it was great to see BOTH Juninho's Pernambucano and Paulista play together on both club and country!! And I hope to see it again!!

Yes, Club and Country!! In 2000 both Juninho's Pernambucano and Paulista played with Romario and Euller for Vasco da Gama and played in Brazil's WC qualifiers vs Venezuela and Colombia!!

I have never seen Juninho Pernambucano play, yet I have my overseas friends who follow the French league rave about him. Where exactly does he play? I know somewhere in Midfield. Do you think he will ever get any playing time with the Selecao?

Ei..ei...ei.....
Juninho e nosso Rei!

That's what they used to sing at Sao Januario during his time with Vasco. Saw him play there, and best I'd describe would be a true central midfielder. Has plays a good defensive mid, but never in the European style of that position. He's not a hard-man; but positions himself well and makes good passes. Can go forward, and even play offensive mid if you need him to (not brilliantly, but well). Very good on the free kicks.

Stellar performances for the past couple ot years with Lyon. Should get a shot at firming up a position with the Selecao.

If you allow me, I would merge this thread with another little oldie one discussing Juninho Pernambucano, so we can have more depth. I'm sure you won't bother, will you Jon? ;)

He improved the game again after entering in the 2nd half. I think he should be given a chance of starting next time in Zé Roberto's place, who disappointed me again in the last games. Any thoughts?

Both ZĂ© Roberto and Emerson have been good and don't deserve the same kind of criticism as previously (ZĂ© Roberto neevr has).

However I agree that Renato and Juninho Pernambucano right now seem to be even better.

MIG, didn't Ze provide the assist on both of Ronaldo's goals in the last game? Ze also plays very well with whatever overlapping left back is used (having played the position himself). And none of the current mids cover as much ground. I know that we all have our preferances - such are the choices with the Selecao - but what is it about his game that you don't appreciate?

I dunno. I know he contributed to some of Brazil's goals last game, but there's something with his play that left me desiring more, like he has something yet to prove. Maybe it's because of his previous underachivements with the seleçăo. I just think that Juninho was more visible as a playmaker when he replaced Zé Roberto.

But what underachievements specifically? Eliminatórias? Aside form Rivaldo everyone underachieved. Copa America? Zé Roberto was great then.

Watched the Uruguay game again today dispassionately and with the sound off (its amazing what you pay attention to when you don't hear the chatter). ZeRo was easily the best midfield player for the Selecao.

In addition to being present on both sides of the field, and providing the outlet for most of the build-ups, his role in the two Ronaldo goals is getting much less credit in the press than he deserves.

On the first, his lob over the top to Ronaldo was millimetric.

On the second, watch him fight off the Uruguayan challenger (believe it was Forlan) tugging on him for a good ten meters, run through midfield, and play the through-ball to Ronaldo.

MIG, you might also notice that he is quite often the most fouled player on the Selecao (its been so in each of the qualifyier games I've seen) - that's an indication that he's always active, making himself available for balls, and willing to go forward em velocidade.

My midfield would definetly have him in.

I do agree Juninho should get a shot, but you are giving him too much of the of credit for the team picking up after he got in....how much of it was due to him, and how much because they HAD to pick it up when he came in? -- they were down a goal at home! Even after coming in late and fresh, ZeRo still had more effective touches than him down the stretch.

I think Parreira could try a line of Renato, Juninho Pernambucano and Zé Roberto as volantes. That way Brazil would have three truly versatile 2-way midfielders playing behind the offensive triangle.

Taking Gilberto Silva out might be harsh as he has been solid, and it would be psychologically devastating after this last game, but perhaps it would make the team even better.

And Émerson may still start on the right as well in such a formation.

tpmazembe is absolutely right, I rewatched the last 20 minutes of that game today and Zé Roberto was huge.

Again, when has he underperformed for Brazil in games that count??? Why does he get so much criticism???
