Manchester United have rejected speculation that they have opened talks with Jose Mourinho about becoming their next manager.

Mourinho stated earlier this week that he wants return to the Premier League once his contract with Inter Milan expires in 2011.

This could very well fit with Ferguson's retirement date - should he stand by his decision to leave the United helm in 2010 - 24 years after taking charge.

The above posted for what its worth... I heard TSO's comments about wanting to return to the Prem after his gig in Milan, but I don't recall reading or hearing any speculation in the media about him possibly replacing SAF when he hangs it up. Of course, I've been concentrating on midterms at school the past week so it's possible I missed something.

There's been some talk of it here and there. The News of the World are running it as a headline tommorow too. (Link) (http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/sport/article53198.ece)

Now whether United's statement was designed to pre-empt that, I don't know. Thing is, I do find it slightly strange that United would come out and comment on that at all. We're not usually in the business of answering to press speculation of any kind. Not going to go down the line of saying there's no smoke without fire or that I think it will happen but that the fact that they've said something makes me think it's more likely than if they had said nothing at all. It seems a bit out of place.
