Psychedelic Furs
Happy Mondays
Amusement Parks on Fire
last night, San Diego HOB

My friend Jon plays guitar for the Mondays, so he got a whole bunch of us in. And he repped his hometown with his Padres jersey and Reggie Bush-esque 619 eye black.

It was pretty fun, getting to see Shaun Ryder live is like watching Manchester royalty.

Fantastic show. Glad to finally get to see Kylesa live. They cancelled here once this year and I missed them the other time they played here (opening for Mastodon) earlier this year. I had high expectations and they delivered.

The OohLaLa Music Festival night #2
Hollywood, Mon Amour, The Dø, and SoKo
Henry Fonda Music Box, LA
last night

Kind of a disaster. Emilie Simon was supposed to play but she was a late scratch so SoKo subbed in. She had what seemed like her friends playing various instruments in her backup band and just when I thought she hit the climax with her big, happy, Feist-y singalong number, she shooed them all off stage and played a couple really sad songs by herself, which she introduced by informing us that her boyfriend had just cheated on her last night. Just her Bjork-like little voice, her notebook, and a guitar. Spoiling the mood slightly were all the Hollywood types at the bar having extremely loud conversations.

Next up were the three piece band called The Dø, who we really wanted to see. It was their first LA show, and one to forget. Their earpiece monitors kept going out during the first song, causing the girl singer to almost cry on stage. Second song went fine. Third song, the guy's shit completely didn't work so he started yelling at the sound guy through a megaphone. I was secretly hoping this was part of the act but no, they angrily stormed off after that, their LA debut completely ruined. The french are so temperamental.

After that was Hollywood Mon Amour, an offshoot of Nouvelle Vague except instead of 80's indie hits covered bossa-nova style they cover 80's movie songs in more of a stripped-down way. Take My Breath Away, Eye of The Tiger, Footloose, etc. The singer was SMOKIN' hot and I really liked the guitar player. He sounded like Marc Ribot. But by then my friends were pissed off and tired so we left mid-set.

Pretty good, but nothing life changing. The two people I went with seemed to really enjoy it though.

And I'm going to go see another friend's band (The Bomb) play with New Model Army on Saturday.

Red Fang was supposed to play here (Birmingham) over the summer or maybe it was the spring. Anyway, the place they were playing went out of business a couple of weeks before the show. Almost all the shows that were booked into that place were booked into other venues, but the Red Fang was one of the few that didn't. I was really looking forward to seeing them too.

Sept. 29/2009: Arctic Monkeys @ the Kool Haus.

Good, loud show (my ears are still ringing). Set list was a bit predictabe though. It was an all ages show so the crowd was hit and miss. Moshing to "505"? Really?

The Horrors
Detroit Bar, Costa Mesa
last night

Kylesa will have to wait. Was supposed to see The Horrors on Tuesday night in San Diego but that didn't work out. I don't know if the club put this song on or the band did, but they walked out to the song Jamie Gumb dances to in Silence of the Lambs, causing almost half the crowd to sing along and one girl to shout, "I ********ING HATE THIS ********ING SONG!"

Strange set from The Horrors. I'm not positive, but I think the main set was all from their latest album which is like a shoegaze-y Joy Division. Then for the encore, they played a couple songs from their first album which is more neo-goth garage rock, like a very English-style Cramps. It's like as if my bloody valentine came out and played loveless, then for the encore they played stuff off of This Is Your Bloody Valentine. Speaking of mbv, I noticed the guitar player mainly played two Fenders, one that was red on red and looked like Belinda Butcher's guitar, the other red on white which looked like Kevin Shield's. Singer looked like a young Howard Stern.

Enjoyed it, but it was an all ages show and the city curfew on all ages show made it shut down a bit past 11pm, which sucked since he didn't start 'til 9:45 or so. I saw him earlier this year with a full band (in an 18+ scenario) and that was phenomenal. This was just him. It was fun, but didn't hold a candle to the full band show.

Better than I thought it'd be. It was my first time seeing Andrew Bird and I didn't know if it would translate well live, but it did. It was my third time seeing St. Vincent, and she was as amazing as always.

1 October 2009
Scott Stadium (UVA)
Charlottesville, VA

3 October 2009
Carter Finley Stadium (NC State)
Raleigh, NC

The set known as "The Claw" is simply one of the coolest things in rock and roll history. 168 feet tall and takes up a little less than half the field of wherever it's at. U2 did a great job of creating an "intimate" atmosphere in huge stadiums. If you get a chance to catch a show near you, we found tons of tix in the lot well below face value. Sat on the floor within 5-20 feet of the stage each night. Floor is very undersold so outside of a 40 foot group, the rest of the field is pretty wide open. First 2,000 in get a wristband to be in the Ellipse.

Great show from the Allmans and I love the Instant Live CDs. My only disappointment is that the last two times I've seen the Allmans play locally the warm up acts have essentially been co-headliners, which ends up shortening the Allmans' set and reducing the CD package from three discs to two.

Was Derek Trucks with them?
