View Full Version : Tactics question: why doesn't Man Utd attack throw-ins?

I've noticed that many of Utd's opponents get their best chances by attacking our defensive throw-ins. It seems very rare that Utd actually build possession after a defensive throw-in.

However, Utd often completely surrender defensive throw-ins by the other team, or bring only token pressure (just Ruud and maybe the AMC). Giving them a free ride seems like a mistake to me, especially when it pays dividents for the other side fairly frequently.

Good teams like Arsenal and Newcastle regularly pressure defensive throw-ins with success. Liverpool generated their best chance of the 1st half by pressuring a defensive throw-in in the last game.

Why does SAF do this?

It's not just throw-ins they don't attack, Utd play a zonal defensive game generally - they choose to deny the opposition space in which to work rather than pressurise players immediately. If possession of the ball is lost then they funnel back and form their defensive barrier further downfield.
