i think it was a fiorentina player about 3 years ago, who biked it from about 40 yards out. it even kissed the underside of the crossbar as it went in. probably not the 'best' but still great to watch.

George Best in the NASL when he beats like 6 defenders off the dribble inside the 18 and scores.

The commentator said something like "He'll get the goal and he'll also get three assists."

Great Goal

That was Adani on my birthday against Barcelona in the Champions league...fluke goal but fun to watch. That was the most exciting match I ever saw, 3-3 draw in a meaningless last match to the first group stage as both teams had already qualified

George Best did have the advantage that the opponents defence was made up of overaged women.

This thread makes me regret the demise of footofgod.com.

And, unfortunately, I had downloaded a lot of the best of them before they went down, but then my PC crashed...

My brother and I were just talking about that one. He was at that game and even talking about it now brings a tear to his eye ;^)

OK, i'll spell it out for you. The header was mega powerful (as with a bullet shot or header. The term doesn't mean flying dead straight like a real bullet), but also had an arcing trajectory on it (hence 'loop'). Let's face it, a header from the penalty spot is gonna need plenty of power and height to beat the keeper to the top corner, innit? If you're having that much trouble visualising it, why not just download the video?

Any of many by Matt Le Tissier.

2 that stand out - vs Blackburn (when they won the title) from 35 yards out smashed over the head of Tim Flowers (his own personal favourite) & the one against Newcastle when he played keepie-up through the defence.

Johan Cryuff Barca-Atletico de Madrid 1973-74 season. I belive it was either Asensi or Rexach who centered the ball from outside the box on the right. The ball looks like it is going out of bounds since it is too far ahead of Cryuff. Out of no where he leaps into the air about 5 feet off the ground, sticks out his left foot and hammers it home. The goalkeeper Miguel Reina had that look of disbelief that someone was able to touch the ball that wasn't going to be playable.

Great shot by a great player!

Wasn't the blackburn one the dipping volley that went in the top corner? I would have added that one to my initial list if I'd thought of it. Tremendous goal. Plus any goal against Newcastle is good in my book.

Yes, that was pretty excellent. Or Roberto Carlos' free kick goal against China.

Of all of the spectacular goals referenced on this thread, the most significant and least appreciated has to be the Maradona goal against Belgium in the '86 WC semifinal.

He beat a triple-team 35 meters out, beat a fourth defender, then with the outside of his left foot, as he was falling left, he bent a brilliant shot concave to the goalkeeper inside the far right post.

In under 10 seconds he demoralized one of the best teams in the world, sealing their defeat. That goal clinched Argentina's ultimately winning trip to the finals that year. The game was effectively over after that goal.

At that stage of a WC, under that kind of pressure, that brilliant a goal is one of the pieces of magic that set Maradona apart from everyone else.

The best goal I'd ever seen was back in 92 or 93 (I think) when I just started to follow international soccer. It was Marseille vs PSG, I think in Marseille. Basielle Boelle (sp?) rec'd a cross right outside the 18 some how his back was to the goal and he did a diving header with his body wraped around the defender in front of him. It was the most powerfull header I'd ever seen, right in the upper corner. After he scored the goal he was running towards their bench and started crying. Now thats passion for the game.

My own memory of Basile Boli is of he and a french team mate going after Stuart Pearce, can't remember who else it was but he grabbed Pearce from behind and Boli headbutted him, it was a peach. However, Boli obviously underated Pearce cos as Pearce was recovering Boli could be seen struggling to recover himself. The moral of the story is, you dirty French should never mess with Psycho.
You need to see it yourself to appreciate it.

Anyway, there are too many goals to choose from. Weahs goal for AC Milan when he ran from his own box, Van Bastens overhead for Ajax v Groningen and his goal in 88.
