Owen's goal against Argentina gets pimped so much, I just want to point out that Junichi Innamoto scored one just like it for Japan in this World Cup against Belgium. He took a pass in stride, blazed past one defender, cut past another into the box, and rocketed a left footed strike into the upper corner. I don't wanna come out and say there's a bias, Owen's goal was thrilling to watch, but it seems like he and Innamoto scored the same goal and Junichi gets hardly any mention, and people are falling over to call Owen's one of the best ever. Perhaps it's the England-Argentina stage, in the round of 16, as opposed to Japan playing Belgium in the first round? Whatever the reason, I just wanna throw Junichi's goal into the discussion to see what everyone thinks. I belive if Owen's gets that kind of clout, his should as well.

Anyone else agree with me on this one?

Owen's goal came in such a hyped up game. Remember, there was a war between England and Argentina a while back. Belgium and Japan don't have that type of rivalry there.

helmzgk, check the last few lines of my post, that's exactly what I said. The media situation surrounding the two games were very different, but that doesn't mean the goals were.

Best one I've seen live is DeRosario's goal against MN Thunder in an exhibition this year. Unreal flying volley.

I'd probably go with Rivaldo's bicycle kick. I'm not sure who it's against, as the clip is in Japanese. I'll try to describe it.

His midfielder dribbles a bit from inside the opponents half until he lays a lob off straight onto Rivaldo's chest. Rivaldo is at the edge of the box on the left side with his back to the goal. He jump up to chest it straight into the air, comes back down, steadies himself, jumps into the air and lands a great curving bicycle kick right into the bottom corner.
this is in the second leg match against valencia maybe? i wouldnt say it was the greatest goal (amazing tho), but i would say greatest performance. coming into the 2nd leg barcelona needed 3 goals to win on aggregate. rivaldo had a hat trick, finishing off with this 30yard so chest to bicycle.

i think it may be the roberto carlos goal from the corner flag mentioned earlier. i also agree the seedorf from 97 is much better than beckhams. beckham did nothign but lob a stupid keeper. clarence rifled a shot (the most powerful and on the spot shot i have ever seen) from around 50m and scored. roberto carlos aslo has a very similar shot to this one tho. on another note 1 of my fav plays ever would be iggita (sp?), the colombian keeper scorpioning a shot to clear it out against england i believe.

I Love individual goals , so here is a list of a couple that stick out in my mind:
Ryan Giggs vs. Arsenal 199? FA Cup Semifinal
Maradona vs. England & Belgium 1986 World Cup
Saeed Owairan (sp?) vs. Belgium '94 WC
A couple of other goals that I'll always remember:
Gascoigne vs. Scotland '96 EC
Josimar vs. N. Ireland '82 WC
Roberto Carlos vs. France '97 Tournei de France
Negrete vs. Bulgaria (I think) '86 WC

gibby, sorry, i guess i read over that or something.

There's another goal that i saw one time from Elber of Bayern Munich. I think it might have been the 2000 season. Anyways, he's one on one with the keeper, only elber is forced all the way to the corner flag by this keeper. The keeper pursues and elber just hits it with the outside of his right foot and the thing just trickles over the goalline. It's a really neat high light to watch.

I'll agree that it's nice to watch, but I'm tired of everyone thinking that it somehow makes Clint Mathis a genius. As a Burn fan, I'll not be the first to tell you that it said more about Dallas' poor defence than anything about Mathis. He didn't really do anything spectacular with the ball, he just dribbled around defenders who didn't have a clue what they doing and were falling around all over the place.

As much as I hate to say it, I kind of agree. I was wondering what they were doing slide tackling from that far out.

Yeah, I think that's it. I believe one of the clips I have of it says something about a hat trick.

That goal was just beautiful.

Geoff hursts "they think its all over" goal against the Germans in 1966 absaloutly fantastic i will never get tierd of seeing that goal.

Owens goal against Argentina in 98 was a classic on of the best england performances ever and as usual we went out on the penalties.

Bergkamps goal against Argentina in 98 was also another classic and proberbly the best of all time.

And the 5 england scored against Germany were fantastic at the time i watched because i was drunk (watching the goals sober is still good but u realise that the Germans mistakes contributed to them) Great night. I hope carsten Janker got his finger cut of for wagging it the aroggant bastard.

omg i just remembered one of the best ever i think. it was in an Arsenal vs Newcastle Untd game from this previous season. watching it live, i was amazed. If i can remember Arsenal was pushing up the left side towards mid. Im not sure if the ball was moved in then passed to Bergkamp or just crossed to him but he had his back to the goal near the top of the 18 and a player was RIGHT on his back marking him. When the ball came instead of trying to settle it or anything he did a thing with his foot where it went to his right and he went to his left and around the defender and met up with the ball perfectly and put it away. Many people argued it as a mistake but no way it wasnt skill.

Can anybody find Roy Wegerle's amazing run for QPR?

How about Roberto Cabanas' flying overhead back heel for the Cosmos?

Another fave: Tresor's side volley against Germany in the '82 semifinal.

Oh and those Dutch guys from the 70's weren't afraid to shoot from outside.

My favorite goal was Balboa's bicycle against the Crew a couple years ago. That year's MLS goal of the year.

He took a driven cross and had one of the purest bicycles to the upper 90 from about the 18.

One of those dudes was Arie Haan he scored against Dino with a great shot.

There are so many goals to chose from but one thing is for sure it is a Dutch goal :)
Most like one of these two:
Van Basten 1988 EC Final
Bergkamp 2001/2002 EPL against Newcastle (?)

'Celo's bike against the Crew was nice... but I've seen clips of 100 better bicycle/overhead volley goals.

Name one and why it was better.

I've seen other great bikes as well, but it is so rare that they are from hard driven crosses and from as far out as the 18. The shot was also a rocket. Not some looping shot the fell into the goal. There was a reason it was shown all over the world.

I'm pretty young so i haven't seen that many amazing goals from older players...but i'd have to say Roberto Carlos' curving ball a gainst france a few years back was the best....the curve on the ball was unbeliveable...the players had no idea what to do or what actually happened...great goal
