Just bought "Chutes Too Narrow", the follow up to their brilliant " Oh Inverted World".

So far, I'm finding it a massive disappointment.

They have chosen a more stark and typically indie production style, as opposed to their previous album's lush psychedelica.

"oh inverted.." was chock full of brilliantly constructed catchy pop tunes. With "Chutes Too Narrow", the music is too often written around the lyrics.

Finally, there's too much of the high pitched locals. The last album used them sparingly and the production smoothed over the rest. Now it's getting on my nerves.

That said, The Shins are still ten times better than 90% of guitar-based music out there. And to be fair, I was bound to be disappointed. I expect way too much from them.

This is honestly, the first negative comment about it that I've heard. And I read alot of music press...

Yep. There is simply no way to fairly evaluate Chutes Too Narrow. Inevitably, people will listen to it with the brilliance of Oh, Inverted World in mind. That's just not fair. Oh, Inverted World is a perfect album. They'll never, ever, ever make an album that good again.

Chutes isn't as good as Inverted World. But it's still a damn good album.

I've never heard Inverted World. I didn't have a clue what to expect when I purchased this cd. It's not what I thought it would be. Its sound is quite polished, almost too slick for my taste. I can see how a bit of psychedelia would give it a nice edge. The high vocals throughout jumped out at me, but I don't mind them. The cd's in the car right now, so I can't provide track names, but I think tracks 1, 3 and 8 are definite keepers.

Are you trying to get me to blow all my money before Christmas?
