I'm surprised, yet not really, at the lack of talk on this...it came out last Tuesday.
I'm starting to like it. The Way It Is rules. The first track is really nice, too...
Does anyone have an opinion??

I don't have it, but here's what a fellow at the Washington Post had to say:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32617-2003Oct28.html
It includes such doozies as:
-- the album "all but reeks of fear and creative paralysis"
-- "the sort of band that's content to make the same album twice typically doesn't have the stuff for the long haul"
-- "listening to the album is like watching your favorite sports team try to kill time with a slender lead. You can't help thinking, 'Why don't you guys play?'"
-- "It takes work to copy yourself this faithfully, and the Strokes have put in the effort."
-- "Either the band is out of ideas, or it can't shake the chain-smoker pose that defined it, or the pressure of expectations caused the fellas to freak out and freeze."
Ouch.

He's not too entirely off the mark, although the vitriol uses sort of gives away that he could hardly wait to write that kind of stuff before he ever heard it.
It's not brilliant, but either was the first record...

Now, I do not read Rolling Stones magazine.
BUt I happen to know for a fact that the magazine had exclusive rights with the band that they do not grant any interviews with any other print media until after that Stones' issue is made available to readers.
Talk about a calculated career launch into the mainstream...
However, I do like their newest cd. They developed their sound, their identity with their first cd and successfully carried it over to this second release without losing any momentum or appeal.
Therefore, recommended if anyone likes the Stokes.
Or Radio 4.
Or Pearlene.

Why do music critics think that musicians have to reinvent themselves with every album or forge some new musical ground? Heck, the Ramones did the same thing for twenty years and they were still a great band.
So the new CD isn't a quantum leap in a different direction? So what? While not the best album I've ever heard, and while it's not much different from "Is This It," it's still a palatable record.

I wouldn't be surprised, but where's the proof??

One thing I can't abide is the laziness they represent. They remind me of the SNL skits about Donatella Versace. It's alright if you can't play more than two chords or sing or do anything else, just don't record music. Or do anything involving music. Don't even sing along at a concert. And people should stop paying money to listen to them. Like that band, I think it's called Jet. What a ********ing joke.

Proof? Of course, I don't have any http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
During the opening night of their tour, a local Philly paper tried unsuccessfully to secure an interview with Casanovas or any other band members, stating the reason why in his article, despite being promised by promoters prior to the show.

While the new album is pretty much more of the same...you could do alot worse. People putting them down are a bit cynical. The first LP is packed full of catchy, bouncy, well written and clever pop songs that are fun to dance to. What you should be attacking is the English press who once again decided to deify a group they think can sell them a bunch of magazines. I doubt the group themselves have bought into all of the press.

I thought I was going to have to become the official Strokes apologist, but I think that you've earned the role. Still, I think this Slate review sums up the band's merits:

"Room on Fire" has really grown on me. I like it even more than "Is This It."

Yeah I think thats basically the problem. They are a good band who were made out to be everything from the saviors of rock to the saviors of mankind. Rock music was in a rut (still is really) and the press, especially in England, made these guys the next big thing, and plastered their pictures everywhere. Clearly we're seeing the backlash about now.
I think they're a good band, though not anything spectacular. Their music is simple, and generally enjoyable. History probably won't be kind to them, but I've never really cared about that. The Strokes make fairly good music that I enjoy, and I don't really give much of a crap about the media's reaction to them.

Screw all of you, I like the Strokes
But seriously, I really like this album. The strokes may not be so deep but they are a good band and the music may be simple but that is what people have complained about punk and other music so I think its unfair. Also if they press made a big deal its because of the lack of buzz in rock. I would rather they also give the coverages to bands like The Shins and The Walkmen but the Strokes are not so bad. If its true what I read that Eat me Alive of Limp Bizkit is a hit in the US, then The Strokes are the least of the problems for Rock.

I would never criticize a band for making the same album twice. I like consistency in a band.
I'll admit I've only ever heard one Strokes song though, and was not sure what all the fuss is about.

I've listened to the album quite a bit now, and I'm really starting to like it more. But I can tell you one thing. If this had been there first album, the hype would have been cut in half. It still kills, though.
