I think if history has taught us anything it's to expect to see that Basel v. Barcelona game pop up on your screen on either ESPN2 or Classic. Personally I wouldn't be shocked to see the Atl. Madrid-Liverpool be the ESPN2 match and then at 5 on Classic see the Basel v. Barca match. I don't think that Setanta and ESPN can show the same match and Setanta is advertising it.

At the expense of decent ratings? Doubt it...

Hey ESPN...you might to showcase Arsenal for once in the CL.
It's not like they play the football that might attract new fans. Oh wait...they do play that kind of football!!
The match vs Fenerbache should be exciting.

They always butcher the TV listings. Man United is GUARANTEED airtime. They could be playing an Uzbek team and it would still get top billing.

I don't get a lot of complaining that happens on this board about why one game is shown over another because I just assume that the networks know what makes them the most money relative to advertising, licensing fees, and number of viewers. But I am confused by Setanta's heavy focus on Greek and Portugese teams. Can those of you who pay more attention to the TV industry shed some light on this? Is there really that big of a demand by Greek and Portugese expats in the USA or is this a product of buying the rights for multiple markets when one market is dominant (e.g., Greeks in the UK)? I ask because it would seem that the Villa-Ajax game would be a more attractive option than most of the other UEFA Cup games. I have nothing invested in any of the games at this point but as a neutral that game would seem to be the best of the bunch. Take care.

Daniel,
Going back 10-15 years ago, Setanta was simply a provider of soccer matches to bars and clubs and served the following communities: Scottish, Irish, Portuguese, Greek and Croatian. To this day, there are dozens of cultural clubs, bars and restaurants with BUDs (Big Ugly Dishes) on their roofs and receiving Setanta's signal. To answer your question as to why the Greeks and Portuguese teams are getting heavier focus can be best understood by looking at Setanta's coverage of Rangers and Celtic games from Scotland. They already have a base of customers that purchase these games for their clubs and have been there for well over a decade. That is why to this day, you have the above national team games consistently on their "premium" system that requires a BUD.
From a financial standpoint, I doubt the dollar amounts from the clubs and bars comes even close to the Premiership amounts. But that is why the Premiership is distributed via small dishes and cable systems to have the number of subscribers that make the huge investment into the Premiership proportional to the enormous costs. I would venture to guess that Setanta looks at the 2 distribution channels as two separate entities. The bars and clubs a "small business" venture with their reliable network of bars and clubs; and then there is the "big business" of Setanta USA which is just another niche channel living and dying based on distribution and the much higher costs of the product (aka Premiership).

I see from ESPN's own lsitings that they are set to show Liverpool-Athletico Madrid live (espn2) on Wednesday Oct 22nd....with Chelsea-Roma on ESPN Classic delayed at 5pm.
However, my Time Warner Cable (NC) lists Chelsea-Roma as being the live on espn2 game - and a friend of mine with DirecTv says that Chelsea-Roma is listed live there also.
I'm hoping these are cases of local mis-types......but can anyone shed any light on this??
Edit: btw, neither game is listed live on ESPN2 the Big Soccer "On tv" calendar

My DirecTV guide says Liverpool is live on ESPN2, Roma is live on Setanta, and Roma is delayed on ESPN classic. Use your manual record function if you are worried about the game(s) not recording and follow the times SA listed in this thread.

Haven't watched today's matches yet but I can't believe that ESPN would show the same game on ESPN2 and Classic. Just in case, though, I am (and would recommend) just recording both games. And, again, if you are using DirecTV, the manual function is the way to go for the ESPN2 game because sometimes a change in teams listed will result in the program not being recorded, whereas manual will not be affected if the on-screen guide changes.
