Behind the Badge reports (http://www.behindthebadge.com/2008/10/danilo-noel-diron.php) the passing of Danilo Noel Diron, the color analyst for WACA/Radio America's Spanish language broadcasts of D.C. United games. Those of you around four years ago may remember the fantastic article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A50050-2004Nov14.html) that Mike Wise did in the Post about Diron's close friendship with Jaime Moreno, and Jaime's dedicating the success in the 2004 MLS Cup to Diron during Diron's struggle with liver cancer. That struggle ended this past Friday.

Dave Johnson's piece was very nice. You realize that both Danilo and Gordon Bradley are gone, but always part of the collective memories of DCU players and fans. Makes you realize why you follow a team, and why sports teams have passionate followers: because through those shared experiences, a sense of community, history and tradition is created.

In the early days, Spanish radio was the only choice of coverage for many matches and I really got used to listening to Danilo's commentary (even if I didn't understand much of it!). A sad day for United.

Same here. With a few key words and intonations, you got what you need to know.
Listening to those games reminded me of my youth when I listened to Blast road games on the radio, likely in Wichita, at ungodly hours for a school night.
I am sure it was a good life. Peace, Senor.

This is a terribly sad day. I'm in the same boat as Lowecifer - I remember many nights when Danilo was the only live broadcast option for matches, and knowing barely any Spanish at all I would listen anyway. You could tell what was going on just by the way he called the match. RIP.
