I'm watching my recording of USA - Cuba and it just strikes me how much better Donovan is than everyone else we surround him with. It's almost ridiculous - in a good way.
He's taken his game to another level this year.

His lobbed ball to Beasley was sublime, he's really improved on every area of the game. I really hope he gets to prove himself abroad this January. Nothing could be better for than the US team coming into 2010 with a confident LD doing well in England, Spain or Italy. Landon was on everyone's shitlist after 2006, he was quite possibly the most hated US player on BS, I was certainly in the "LD's a **********" camp. Nice to see a professional accept the criticism, work to fix the problem, and actually follow through.

IMO, the two most improved of the regulars (so as to exclude the young kids, obviously) between 2006 and now are Donovan and Onyewu.

I'm definitely in the minority on this one. I have always been (and continue to be) a guy who thinks Donovan is underappreciated by the American fan. And he did have a couple of nice moments (including the goal) last night. However, I was at the game, and I thought Donovan was poor overall. Beasley was way better than him on both sides of the ball and Kljestan, in the balance, had better touches. I thought Donovan was tentative, made many more poor passes than good ones, and was nonexistent in helping cover defensively. But that's just me. And again, I like Donovan and think he is a must on this team.

He's certainly better against CONCACAF and MLS level comp than any other US player. This has never been disputed.

Just once I'd like to get through a LD thread without hearing about competition level...

Your narrative perhaps. Personally I don't see the problem in qualified, nuanced praise.

That'll happen when he raises his competition level... Hopefully sooner then later.

If he's on a higher level, he should probably move up.

Landon will go to a European league soon, and he'll have his opportunity to quiet his critics, thought realistically nothing he does will probably quiet them. Most just hate him and find excuses to diminish him, or they like to build people up and tear them down.

The man is a Concacaf giant. That is something and is quite valuable to the team.

Frankly, I've always suspected that part of what many of Donovan's detractors don't like is that he's always looked more like a Backstreet Boy (now with receding hairline) than a McBride or a Dempsey tough guy the way soccer players ought to look in their minds, I guess. Though I don't think many would say so.
Just a long-held sneaking suspicion on my part...

Just a long-held sneaking suspicion on my part... There is certainly an element of weirdness to the general dislike of Donovan. It almost doesn't make sense. I just dispute this particular game though, not his talent level or his importance to the team on the whole.

with all due respect, I think you should re-watch the match on TV. Seriously - his passing was off the charts.
