The 1 thing it has to do is to get a Black guy to score in the WORLD CUP .. If that is done i think the sport will rocket off in the states.. It will be very popular.

Earnie Stewart. 1994 World Cup. Los Angeles. USA vs. Columbia. Earnie scored the second goal.

What do you say now?

Considering Stewart did it in '94, I think we can stick a fork in this thread -- it's done.

Well I haven't read Toot's "Official Black" guidebook, but people who live in Holland and have African heritage would be considered black. :D

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha! Toot, you are too funny.

Mods, close this thread please. I'm half black and even I find this (unintentionally) racist thread offensive.

Even though he's joking, it's a much more sensible idea.

well, i think we're throwing the racist card around too easily, as is far too often the case these days. toot, though not very PC, has a good point.

nothing wrong with Landon Donovan being the face of MLS, but a young African-American as highly touted and marketed definitely wouldn't hurt MLS' overall popularity. And i think we're only in the beginning stages of Dovovan being marketed to the US, especially if he can manage to stay in MLS longer.

i am in overall disagreement with toot though. this isn't "the one thing" MLS needs. MLS just needs time, it is taking root. ;-)

He's right... if sports wanna be popular they do need black guys to score.

The thinking is wrong, but he has the right idea. I dont want anyone to take this the wrong way, but unlike in other countries, soccer is thought of as a rich, white kids sport. Its not being played in the inner cities of the US. Its played out in suburbia with soccer mom's dropping their kids off to play after school. There are a hundreds of potential Freddy Adu's out there(its funny to think of this kid as having reached potential, which he hasn't, but you know what I mean).

Its not a bad thing.. Its just When you have a White Superstar it makes the sport kinda boring.. Vinilla.. ..

Iam just going right to the POint its how americans think..

Golf-TIger Woods
Basketball - Michael Jordan
Baseball - Barry Bonds
Tennis - Venus sisters
Boxing - Mike Tyson
Football - Jerry Rice .. Or mostly every halfback

SOCCER - Landon Donvon ..

what is this saying about the sport that only young white guys that look sissy .. Play soccer.

A black star would make it more cooler and more PC for ESPN.

Hockey is a good sport yet it doesnt have black stars why do you think its not as popular..

I don't know if your right....

But I can say, on my crusades to convert fans of other mainstream sports into fans of MLS, I find that my black co-workers are much more open minded than many of the white fans I try to convert. Many have even seen a match on Soccer Saturday (part of one anyway).

That being said, had Beasley scored in Korea, I don't think it would have made much of a difference.
