This article is from Saturday, but a good write up on Timmy.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,291-876471,00.html

Several months into his career in England, the real Tim Howard is emerging and it turns out that he was ludicrously misjudged as a man and a goalkeeper. The initial caricature of him as a walking stream of profanity has given way to growing respect for his abilities. Far from being out of his depth, he has instantly established himself as the club's No 1.

[mod note, please do not post entire articles. thx - jamison]

Incredible article. I wish Timmy would get more press as a positive athlete, instead of having to hear about others who throw it all away.

What a well-grounded and humble man. He deserves every success he gets.

Too bad only us few on BigSoccer will ever know about it.

Great piece. Howard deserves all the accolades he is getting at the moment. He is managing himself quite well. Here's to much more success for him.

(atleast until West Ham go back up, then I gotta pull for the draw :) )

a little bit weird in that it's about his wife... but it wouldn't have been done had it not been for timmy...

I loved his take on religion. I couldn't agree more on that subject.

Especially when you get all the buffonery on Trinity Broadcasting from all those hypocrites clamoring to God on one hand and yielding a dagger on the other...

Thanks for posting this. I read the first article from the London Times and thought that was good, but for me this one was even better. Great stuff!

Yeah, the article focuses on "the wife", but it's still pretty good...
"Man United's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson (the Scotsman was knighted after ManU's unprecedented triple championship in 1999), awarded Tim the starting job over French World Cup champion Fabien Barthez.

That earned Tim a $1 million bonus, and he has more than exceeded expectations. The early tabloid headlines that focused on Howard's Tourette's Syndrome now deal only with his magnificent play. "
Sweet!
Also good to know Mathis did something right in 2002...
"Love finds Laura

They met in August 2002, at a party in New York thrown by Clint Mathis, one of the few U.S. soccer players to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. "

Having practised child neurology for over 20 years, I can imagine Howard's mind-set.
Many kids with TS are first affronted by unknowing teachers and parents that try to stop the tics, which are mostly involuntary or poorly controlled. A small percentage swear or curse (coprolalia). A certain percentage have no further tics as grown-ups or "outgrow" them.
Howard seems like many of my patients. Suprisingly adjusted and able to live without medication (although I don't know that) for his tics or anxiety.
Other athletes have had TS and other talented people such as jazz musicians (see the film,"Tic Code") have overcome what finally is a neurological disorder that no one wants to have.
Tim Howard is phenomenal!

Shortly after this article the Times of London went to a pay to view system. Too bad.

It's a pretty good article. Nice to see a Brit media outlet saying something good about an American for once. :)

Although I'm not sure how accurate it is when it says he's "no evangelical, either, when it comes to religion."

I've read in other places that would suggest he is...

Go Timmy!

Cypha:

Remember the target audience of the paper -- British. The Times is a Tory (conservative) newspaper, but even for conservatives in the UK, "evangelical" translates to "loudmouth hypocrite."

You're not going to get many shades of gray in British or European coverage of American religious subjects -- the religious subculture is so vastly different here vs. there, it defies easy comprehension. I thought the story did very well in conveying the importance of his faith in his life. Using the term "evangelical" would have connected him in British minds to the Jerry Falwell/Pat Robertson/Fred Phelps crowd, which wouldn't have helped him at all.

"There was Tim's brother, Matthew, and the MetroStars chaplain and everyone gathered in a circle not far from the Tavern on the Green, near one of those big Central Park boulders.

"Love is patient, love is kind," read Rev. Joseph Hooper, pastor of Mt. Zion Methodist, Tim's church in New Jersey."

------

Do the Metros really have a chaplain, or is the author taking some liberties here?
