We cant play a semi fit keeper on one of the most important nights of Boro's history.

I'd rather have a half-fit, experienced keeper, than a fully fit inexperienced youngster.....

pffffff. I played in goal with a three broken ribs - go figure. He's not that hard really.

I agree. Especially if that injury is affecting the Gks reaction time.

Physical injuries wouldn't affect reaction time. They would affect movement and flexibilty.

Maybe they want to come down and play for them?

I'll get my gloves........... :D

If he has an injury, it will effect his reaction time because keepers with injuries will be thinking about if they can do the action safely without hurting themself.

Now I wish I hadn't flunked sport science.

Surely natural instinct would strive over any physical impedement that inbriates the thought process.

Jaysus. Now I'm lost........

Look at Paddy Kenny, he didnt dive once during the Arsenal Penaly shootout to his right because he was injured. Arsenal picked up on this and each penalty was placed to the right

Mark Schwarzer is recovering well and McClaren is hoping he'll be okay for Thursday.

Carlo Nash and Ross Turnbull are definately out.

Brad Jones has been recalled from Blackpool but has to respond to treatment on his shoulder and back.

Parlour and Reiziger injured..

Probable team: Schwarzer, McMahon, Queudrue, Riggott, Southgate, Doriva, Parnaby, Zenden, Hasselbaink, Graham, Downing.

Well we almost blew that one...

We still have a chance if we go out and attack them in the 2nd leg. We need an early goal.

Oh and Michael Reiziger... go home.

Almost blew it  U honestly think Boro will go to Lisbon and win? Had SCP not let up late in the game it could have gotten pretty ugly!
Good luck next week anyway

Boateng and Parlour both should be fit for the game which is a major boost.

Reiziger and Viduka are doubtful.

As it stands i think the team will be..

Schwarzer, Parnaby, Queudrue, Riggott, Southgate, Parlour, Downing, Boateng, Zenden, Job, Hasselbaink

Damn, I wish that I was able to attend this one, too... :(

Overall, 'Boro just weren't able to contend with Sporting's fierce offensive attack. They did, however, exploit the defense a tad, but Sporting is really strong at home and I can't see them doing what they did at the Riverside in Alvalade in a week's time. 'Boro may have been without some of their stars, but Sporting's first choice CB's, along with the first choice DM, were all out and should be available for the return leg. This one will be a dandy!

Holy crap! Lets hope that they haven't learnt their lesson.

Sporting suffer surprise setback
Monday, 14 March 2005

Sporting Clube de Portugal followed their victory at Middlesbrough FC in the UEFA Cup Round of 16 first leg by sliding to a surprise home defeat against FC Penafiel at the weekend.

Hopes dim
Two second-half goals were enough to defeat Sporting's challenge and dent their hopes of landing the Portuguese SuperLiga title. They currently lie fourth with 42 points, six behind SL Benfica.

Fitness boost
Custódio and Fábio Rochemback missed the Penafiel game through knee and thigh injuries respectively, but both should return to the side for the return game with Middlesbrough on Thursday. In addition it is hoped that Brazilian defender Anderson Polga will prove his fitness in training this week.

Preparation time
Middlesbrough have had more time to prepare for the return game as they were without a Premiership fixture at the weekend and believe they still have a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

Vital strikes
After watching Joseph-Desiré Job and Chris Riggott score late goals to cut Sporting's advantage to 3-2, manager Steve McClaren said: "Of course we can do it. There was enough evidence to suggest we can score goals next week.

Lifeline offered
"Those two goals have given us a lifeline," McClaren went on. "I told the players they are not consolations, that they get us back in the tie. But we need a few players to play better than they did and to defend better and with an almighty performance we can do it."

Trio to return?
McClaren will travel with more confidence should both George Boateng and Mark Viduka be available for selection. Boateng has had an injection to speed up his recovery from a broken toe while Viduka has returned to training after picking up a hamstring injury in December. In addition, Ray Parlour should return after a back injury.
