I was watching Comcast Sportsnite and they just announced that both are out for the rest of season. Gallardo with a sprained MCL (when the hell did that happen?) and Fred with his hamstring issue.

Gallardo with a sprained MCL (when the hell did that happen?)
In the match against Chivas USA. It was announced as possible in Goff's after-action reports on Sunday, and was announced as definite yesterday -- we already discussed it yesterday in the other thread.

Maybe it's time to consider Gallardo,s fitness situation. He has been
a bust since 29 June, I think it's time to look at the Team Attitude
Fitness situation and Gallardo isn't helping either.

What does this mean?

I don't get the criticism. I don't believe Gallardo, Fred, or Emilio are faking their injuries, nor did they get injured due to lack of fitness.

Injuries happen. They happened a lot to DC this year.

In April and May when DC was uninjured, they were playing great. But we lost too many key players this year. The unanswered question is which of these players' current injuries make it more likely that they will be unable to complete next season.

This part, I agree with.

This part, not so much.

Or are harbingers of nagging issues next season. Will we lose Emilio, or Fred, or Gallardo for two games here, four games there, off and on all season long?

When I first heard about this on Goff's blog I was thinking "Shit!".

Now that I've had a chance to think about it and what this team has done this season, I more like "Meh."

Put in those two guys I never heard of before who played their asses off against Blue Cross.

So what time are they announcing Emilio out for the season tomorrow?

Always happens in three's.

I like someone's idea of telling Ben to absolutely not do anything athletic for the next five months. Paint, cook, hold your new child. Do not run. The same can be said for Gallardo. Take up yoga, get more flexible. For Fred, go to Brazil, dance the samba, and come back tanned, rested and ready.

The season is over. It's like the old Senators playing out the string, you follow the team without expectations, enjoying each game for its own sake.

I agree the players aren't faking it. I agree these things happen and that a lot of this is bad luck.

I also think, as I go over the history of the injuries to Fred, Emilio, Q and Gallardo, that they were probably brought back from injury too early.

We saw it with Peralta. Surgery in July. Returned to start a USOC match vs. New England and played all the way (no gradually working him back in), then was back out for a month.

Gallardo went to Argentina, came back, started his first match back, and now is out for the season.

In retrospect, I think the season may have been lost the night of the Charleston game. Emilio and Fred had been out and were questionable, both played, both reinjured themselves, and neither has looked fit since.

Even Quaranta had a few of those "there it goes" moments when he came back too early. Twice, he came back after missing a game only to leave in the first half of his return game. That has to be on the trainers and med staff.

If Fred and Emilio hadn't started the Charleston game, we might not even have one trophy. And I can't tell you how many times I contemplated line-ups and thought "Peralta better f-ing play, even if he's got a peg leg."

But on the whole, I do think you can see a pattern and I do think you can blame the trainers and/or coaches. So here's a brief, unscientific run-down of four players' stats, mostly after the SuperLiga break.

Fred
leaves RSL game (4/26) in 22nd minute with thigh injury or hamstring injury (HI). Post-match reports differ.

returns for 5/21 game at Toronto.

leaves San Jose 6/22 match in 60th minute with HI.

Returns to start 6/29 Galaxy game, but leaves Galaxy game at 76 minutes with HI.

returns for 2nd half of USOC game 7/1 vs. Rhinos.

leaves 8/20 New England match at 72 minutes with HI.

returns in 40th minute of 9/03 game vs. Charleston, but...
finishes 9/03 game vs. Charleston injured and sits out 9/07 game vs. San Jose

Enters 9/16 game vs. Dallas at start of 2nd half.

leaves 10/4 game vs. Dallas at 51 minutes.

Out for the year.

Quaranta
leaves 6/14 Red Bulls game at halftime with HI.

returns 6/29 for Galaxy game, but...
leaves Galaxy game 6/29 in 27th minute with HI.

returns for last 15 minutes of 7/15 game vs. Atlante, but...
reinjures himself, and sits out 7/18 game vs. Houston

returns for 8/10 game vs. Red Bulls.

leaves L.A. game 9/21 in 2nd half with HI(?), sits out 9/25 game at Marathon.

starts 9/29 game at Dallas, but leaves in 41st minute--Sohn says injury, Q says tactical.

returns for 10/4 game vs. Chivas and looks lost.

Emilio
fails to start 5/17 game at Chivas USA due to HI or poor play (different reports--Emilio says hamstring)

returns for 5/21 game at Toronto.

leaves NY 8/30 match at halftime w/ adductor strain.

returns for 9/03 game vs. Charleston, but...
leaves 9/03 game vs. Charleston in 7th minute and sits out 9/07 game vs. San Jose.

Enters 9/16 game vs. Dallas in 68th minute.

Leaves 9/28 game at Dallas in 55th minute with HI.

Sits out 10/4 game vs. Chivas.

Gallardo

sits out Fire game (5/8) with groin injury.

returns for 5/17 game at Chivas USA.

diagnosed with hernia after Galaxy game 6/29.

returns for 8/30 match vs. Red Bulls.

leaves country following 9/06 match vs. Earthquakes.

returns (and starts!?%?) for 10/4 match vs. Chivas, but...
leaves in 72nd minute with knee issue.

out for season.

Completely agree with you bro, we let our players all come back whether because they wanted to or they were pushed, or both.

I could see why gallardo wanted to push himself, to show all the angry fans that he is worth that money, that he isnt here just to take the cash and go to mar de plata and chill. He has heart, so much so that he hurt himself trying to prove to the fans that he will die for our club to show how committed he is, he even hired his own friggin' trainer!!!

Fred is the same way also, i met him at the NYRB game in the VW lounge, we talked and asked him since hes up here and not even in the bench, is he going to be ready to play vs. charleston? With no thinking about it, he said of course, he wanted to play that game real bad it seemed also.

Both players rather play injured and try their asses off, but it always isnt the smartest thing to do. Even Peralta when he played the Rev's and man handled them in the defense, he had the best game i ever seen out of him that night, just to get reinjured.

Now that I have cooled off a bit and listened to reason, I think the pressure on the team to do very well this year hurt every phase of their game. Every US team in CONCACAF cup sucked wind in the beginning and actually looked like they had trained less, not more. Open Cup became a massive priority when it became clear we might not win anything else. And the Champions League, the harder we tried the worse it got.

The injuries are not due to lack of heart. Skill maybe, sense definitely, but I am sure they are not dogging it and on my best day I couldn't have kept up with them.

How long of a winning streak did DC put together? Was it 5 games? 6?

In April and May (which is what the OP said, and what I replied to)? One game (two if you include CCC games). OTOH, we did have a four-game losing streak in April and May.
