--18 hours for the first round, 12 hours for each pick after that
--PM the person after you make your pick
FraserMC is getting a PM from me.......
10 Rounds unless we all want to go more later....
W You will have 18 hours to make your first round pick to facilitate this thing getting started, but every pick after that will only be 12 hours. In theory, the first round should fly though. Snake Draft. PLEASE PM THE PERSON BEHIND YOU!
What is draftable: For the most part anything. Documentaries, Mini-Series, whatever you want really. I don't really think we should have a minimum numbers of episodes or parts for documentaries/mini-series IMHO. Country of Origin and Channel are completely irrelevant. Draft whatever you want.
Sporting Events (the Olympics or the Super Bowl or Monday Night Football and let's throw in Wide World of Sports) that happen to be televised or political type events that happen to be televised (like an assassination or coverage of 09/11) or cultural events that happen to be televised (the Oscars, Tony's, Grammy Awards, etc) are not draftable. However, news shows (ABC/NBC/CBS Nightly news, sixty minutes, dateline) and sports shows (Sportscenter, Fox Football Fone-IN hahaha) are draftable. Late Shows are in. Reality Shows are in.
You do draft the entire run for a show though. So if I draft Happy Days, I get the part both before and after the jumping of the shark. However, if I draft the Office, you can draft the BBC run or you can draft the NBC run, you don't get both by saying "The Office".
If you have any questions about whether a particular show is draftable, feel free to PM me, but I am going to lean heavily towards something being in.
Try to use as much of the Bigsoccer power (Youtube links, pictures, links) to justify your pick (if there are great moments or scenes that you want to link for instance) and put together your justification behind your pick
(NOT REQUIRED but it makes it more fun for everyone who may not have seen your TV show) IF YOU NEED HELP DOING THIS, SHOOT ME A PM.
There is no set criteria for how this is judged so draft whatever the hell you want. While some might be TV snobs and draft the most acclaimed television available, others might draft their personal favorite TV shows. There is no set criteria for what is good and what is bad...just have fun and hopefully we will all learn more about television generally, shows in particular, and things we may have missed that we might want to catch via Netflix or some other method.
FraserMC is on the clock.

1st round pick - Fawlty Towers (first series '75, second series '79)
not what i'd imagine the majority of people would expect for the first pick. my Britishness is shining through. i realise there are a lot of big hitters out there but i wanted this badly. certain drafters (the irishman for one) may have grabbed it before the draft got back to me.
so why did i choose it over all others?
quite simply it's the best sitcom i've seen. it only ran for 12 episodes which i'm sure in a way, plays a big part in it's lastability. the writing is outstanding for every episode and it's expertly delivered by the cast. Cleese takes the main credits but to suggest it's a one man show would do the rest of the cast a huge dis-service.
Prunella Scales was never better as his Sybil, his "little piranha fish", "little nest of vipers" etc.
and would Cleese have been half as good without dishing it out to Manuel the bumbling waiter from Barcelona played by Andrew Sachs.
i still have the collection on VCR and it's still wonderful to watch.
a few clips to see. the first one has one of my favourite lines in it from the series.
ius2Q96XaNU
"herds of wildebeasts sweeping majestically..."
the second scene is from the episode "The Germans". Basil has left the hospital, a moose fell on his head, without being discharged. he feels he needs to get back to his hotel as Sybil is also in hospital. he returns just as German tourists arrive. he's more than a little disorientated still...

pc? hell no, and all the better for it.
the third clip is a compilation of some other classic scenes.

finally,
In a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted for by industry professionals, Fawlty Towers was placed first.

A preface: I'm planning on trying to mix in shows which I love with shows that I also feel are truly some of the greatest ever whether for technical innovation, acting, story, drama, laughs or any other reason I can think of.
The way this all comes up in my head is as if I was planning a line-up of shows for TheSlipperyNetwork (now referred to as TSN). Once the draft is done I will put my picks into a Mon-Fri. line-up (or shorter depending on how many picks we all end up making).
I've come up with a pretty good list to make my choices from and there are some I really want to make sure I get. But there is only one that can be chosen first (even if it means I can't get one I love later on).
So with the 2nd selection of the 1st round of the TV Show Draft, TSN selects:
The Sopranos
http://www.adirondackbasecamp.com/basecamp/wp-content/uploads/the-sopranos.jpg
This series changed the face of television and showed how a TV series can indeed be an on-going artistic movie in a serialized fashion. As with many shows which preceded it they brought to life a skewed version of the American family yet at the same time it was wholly original.
A great scene at the pine barrens:

The final scene of the series (which I think is great):

Yeah. I have other shows I love way more, but it had to be done for the greater glory of TSN's line-up of brilliance.

I have a proxy vote for Billy Ireland.
Billy chooses the Dukes of Hazard.

OK, I wish he was going to choose the Dukes of Hazard because his real vote is for The Wire, which was going to be my choice. And when I saw that Frasermc picked Fawlty Towers, I thought I had a chance to grab it.
Billy's is a great pick, and I am on the clock. I have PMed me and I'll make my choice in the morning.

Bravo on The Wire Billy. I watched the entire run earlier this year and was really impressed by it. The fourth season was amazing.

I got shafted in the draft order!
Having said that, of the things drafted up to now, only Fawlty was on my shortlist. So no harm done, ... yet.

It was the same with me - while many shows from HBO have been successful over here (or else had big cult gfollowings, like Oz), The Wire for some reason never got any real advertising, hype, or viewers (probably since it was always on at such awkward timeslots which doesn't mix well with how much it requires dedicated viewing) - an utter shame.
I was meaning to get around to watching the show from the start but never found the time and to be honest I was not overly impressed by the detached pilot I saw of it, where they were still very much working out a few kinks and looking to find their groove. I had also heard it compared with The shield a lot, which I was not really a fan of to be honest. Around June I downloaded the whole series out of frustration of not being able to find it at any accessible time over here, and  wow. It is the best, smartest programme on TV that I have probably ever seen, and the covers it's content and subjects in more depth, completeness and with such a level-handed fairness that it is bizarre. I can't say enough good about the show, and Omar Little is my favourite character that I can remember. Also Bunk/McNulty might just get the nod for my favourite duo of recent years, even over Sil & Paulie Walnuts from The Sopranos (wh oare brilliant).

A little more justification for The Wire:

I'm not really arsed adding more now, but for anybody who hasn't seen The Wire yet - watch it!

A great scene at the pine barrens:
V4OakqPbUj0Glad to see you added something from that episode - it has to be one of, if not the, most 'likable' episode in a series as serious as something like The Sopranos. Great, great stuff. I would also add that the episode where Tony goes to Vegas in the final season is the single best hour of TV I have ever seen. I still prefer The Wire as a whole (narrowly!), but Sopranos at it's very, very best it was untouchable.

With The Sopranos and The Wire going #2 and #3, I will pick the show that was really groundbreaking and made both of them possible, Hill Street Blues. This was the show that broke the need for nice, tidy summations at the end of every hour and gave us multiple characters living multiple story lines. And more importantly, it was on network television without the freedom that David Chase and David Simon had creating The Sopranos and The Wire. Plus, the show was “gritty” and “realistic” without resorting to profanity or having sets in strip clubs (though the crime scene with Bunk and McNulty that billyireland posted was hilarious).

I think I might have a clue... he certainly doesn't want it to come flying back to me. :)

I know this may be mocked, but I had to have this show. It's only been on for three years, so it hasn't yet "jumped the shark." (I hate that term)
Without further ado, I select The Colbert Report

I'm sorry I'm not savvy enough to know how to embed these videos (if someone knows how, please help).Videos have to be from Youtube to be embedded. Just put in XXXX [ /youtube]. It is important though, that you obviously leave our that space for the bracket that I put it in order for the code to show up, and also that you only add in the 'code' of the Youtube clip. So for this Youtube URL, you would only add the part with the bold text in place of that 'XXXX' above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfiL2hpnmZ0
