maybe this is no news for american fans, maybe not...
i happened to watch a report on RAI 3 where Mathis and Beasley are interviewed and they confirm interest from Perugia and negotiations underway between the club and MLS to bring the players to Italy for next season; deadline will be august 31st (or maybe later,if serie A is indeed delayed?)
i understand this is a matter of the league matter, not just the MLS clubs Beasley and Mathis are currently playing for and therefore the players themselves claim not to be aware of the details of the negotiations and whether a solution is imminent
so?

These rumors first surfaced just after the WC, but had died down recently. Beasley was apparently very close to a transfer to Middlesboro, but MLS nixed that. Mathis had been heavily rumored to be moving to Germany but his latest knee problems seemed to put an end to those rumors. (He's due to start in tomorrow's match versus Dallas.)
It seems to me that Perugia is constanly linked with some foriegn stars, while some work out, many turn out to be just rumors. As bestianera stated this is completely up to the league, not the clubs, as all player contracts are with the League itself. It seems that MLS is playing hardball with many of it's WC stars, wanting to keep them here in the states. It remains to be seen if that is a wise move.
Mathis would be available on a free transfer after next season (2003). Not sure about the Beas.
Also note that DeMarcus Beasley's brother, Jamar, is playing with Puteolana in Serie C2.
I'll keep my ear to the ground in Metro land regarding these rumors. bestianera, I'm assuming this was rather recent news story (i.e. not recycled)?
good stuff, thanks.

Beasley came closer to going to Ajax instead of Boro...if Fulham had bought Victor Sikora Beasley was almost sure to end up in Amsterdam.
This rumor has gone on for awhile, and nothing's come of it, so I don't think too much of it. If I were Mathis and Beasley, I would be looking to play elsewhere after Gaucci's lunacy was proven in the Ahn saga.

It's funny that the Ahn saga hasn't been solved. I thought Ahn was some superstar who would be scooped up by tons of teams.
So where are the transfer bids?? Hmm, maybe they all saw how crappy he played during the regular season and became wise and passed up on him.

I said before the World Cup that Ahn Jung-Hwan was South Korea's most overrated player. I still stand by that statement.
As for Perugia... what about that moratorium on foreign signings? Perugia would be allowed to sign Mathis or Beasley, but not both.

bitter?
well, anyway, i don't think ahn's great, but i'm sure plenty of european clubs would be interested in him if perugia didn't price him so highly. i've heard that they priced him at 8 million us dollars. i think he should be valued at closer to 3-4 million.

This just goes to prove what people who pay attention to Serie A have said all along. Ahn has sucked it up for two seasons and his goal versus Italy was used as an excuse (a bad one) to get rid of him.
What happened to Arsenal and all the other clubs who said they would be glad to "rescue" him? Hell, what happened to Ahn requesting a transfer? He's perfectly happy in Italy making millions, the dick.

uh... perugia didn't need "an excuse" to get rid of ahn; they could've achieved that goal rather easily by simply letting him go after the loan period was up. but instead, the money-grubbing club tried to capitalize on ahn's newfound celebrity and value by buying out his contract from Busan, and then trying to sell the player to the highest bidder. but alas, no one's bidding in this market with the ridiculous price tag that perugia put on his head.
also, i don't think ahn's "perfectly happy in Italy making millions." he isn't getting paid a dime because he refused to show up to train for perugia. apparently, he'd rather get zero dollars than play for that farce of a club.
perugia messed up, point blank. they jumped at the chance to buy ahn's contract because they thought that they could sell high right after the cup. unfortunately, they were wrong.
all you ahn-haters are idiots. he may have been a crap player in serie a (though some would argue with that assessment), but perugia is clearly in the wrong in this case, not ahn.

Perugia is the club that gave Ahn a chance in a top level league. He owes everything to them, if he's unhappy let him to go one of the hundreds of teams that after the world cup said they would glady have him. Their statements were bigger pieces of PR ************************e than Gaucci's idiotic rant itself. I don't care where the kid goes, chances are he won't be good there either.

Hey there...
your bitter comment was first directed at me, not Jawz, and you still haven't answered my question.

you seem to revel in ahn's misfortunes, making sure to badmouth the player whenever there's a post about him. ahn didn't perform well for perugia, but he didn't get much of a chance. perhaps he didn't rightfully earn his way into the top 11, but really, how "crappy" did he play in his twenty-something appearances?
surely, there are worse players in italy for you to focus your energies. but oh no, ahn remains your favorite target.
in another thread, you posted:
"Ahn's story is that he wants to go somewhere else because he thinks he's a god now"
now where on earth did you get this idea? after the cup, ahn was very thankful to perugia for giving him the chance to practice against top-flight players. but really, if you were him, would you go back to gaucci and company?
it's not like ahn thinks he deserves to start for arsenal or real madrid. he wants to be transferred to a mid-level club that will give him a real chance to play, like psg, fulham, or celtic.
you and jawz love to badmouth ahn, espousing half-truths, and talking about how crappy he was, but i just read an article about how true perugia fans think that ahn was a fairly decent player who never got a chance in the defensive system.
where could this ill will come from? the only thing i can think of is a certain lingering bitterness ...
if i'm wrong, then explain to me why you hate ahn so much.

I've just never seemed overly impressed with Ahn, who as a striker needs to get goals. He has all the tools of an attacking midfielder to be honest, he's quick, has good vision, and incredible touch. But as it is, he hasn't been good for Perugia although I'm not sure why. The only thing I can conclude is that he isn't good enough. Nakata made it to the big time through them, so it isn't a question of an overly defensive coach or being from the East.

Back to the subject of Beasley, I believe his contract is also up after next year, and it's likely MLS won't sell him before that. So, he can take a similar contract to Josh Wolff at $250,000 where he is guaranteed playing time or look abroad where nothing is guaranteed. (except death, taxes and unsubstantiated rumors on Big Soccer)

Call it good timing, call it bad timing. The whole thing was a bit of a farce. Ahn, got his fifteen minutes of fame, and now no one really seems to care. I think it would be awesome to see Mathis, or Beasley in Serie A, even if it is with Perugia. MLS, is coming into its own, producing some talented players, now would be a good time to showcase them to the world.
