Just thought I would mention that former New York Giants receiver Kyle Rote passed on Wednesday. In several press releases, they referred to Kyle Jr., and on PTI they called him "one of the greatest home grown American soccer players ever."

My best wishes go out to the Rote family.

My sympathies to the Rote family.

I saw his Rote Sr play many times and he was a great NFL receiver.

What was astounding about Rote Jr was the fact that he chose soccer over other sports when soccer was nowhere on the mainstream US sports landscape. And his name gave a lot of recognition to soccer during the NASL days. If I recall, he was great in the air but not at his feet.

Condolences.

I often wondered how Kyle Sr. took to his son choosing to play pro soccer instead of gridiron. Kyle Jr. was an accomplished gridiron player with NFL potential. He passed up those opportunities to play soccer and at the time it was a huge PR boost to the game. I still remember the mainstream media buzz and chatter that went on when he decided to go NASL.

As to the rep of Kyle Rote, I only knew him on a video screen, but NYC members of my family that actually knew him always said that he was a gentleman and a class act. The NFL could sure use the likes of him now.
