What are you listening to?

If you're feeling depressed about the Toon, I'd recommend the new Cold War Kids album. It's getting shite reviews because it's not as upbeat and catchy as the first album, but I like it. Really chilled out and bluesy. Relaxing, even.

Current Newcastle United mood music:

The Lemonheads - Rudderless
Idlewild - Modern Way of Letting Go
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Not What You Wanted.
Muse - Time is Running Out.

I'd throw some Radiohead on there, but with my current mood about NUFC I'd probably go for a bath and take the toaster with me.

I've heard the Idlewild and Muse songs. Very appropriate.

As for Radiohead, some Newcastle United mood music would be:

-Sulk
-Nude
-Videotape
-Street Spirit (Fade Out)
-There There
-Down is the New Up
-Let Down
-Exit Music (For a Film)
-How to Disappear Completely

How about Frédéric Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 35 - "Funeral March"

Let me get obscure - for truley depressing, and therefore currently appropriate, stuff you need to check out Richard Thompson. Its crime that no one knows who he is - one of Rolling Stone's top 50 guitar players of all time, award winning songwriter, used to jam with Hendrix in London, still no one knows him. My name on here, in fact, is the title of one of his songs about a guy who kills his girlfriend during a psychotic episode.

Anyway, appropriate songs would include:

Drowned Dog, Black Night
Killing Jar
Shoot Out the Lights
When the Spell is Broken
Walking Through A Wasted Land
I still Dream
Wall of Death

Special mention to "Put Her There Pal", for the following lyric which I dedicate to Ashley,

"Some say you're a rattlesnake in the grass,
But I say that the sun shines out of your arse".

I went to see him at the Sage last year. Did a lot of the stuff off his newest album - explained the meaning of a few songs too. "Dad's gonna kill me" being about how soldiers shorten Baghdad to Dad. He's f*cking amazing on an acoustic too. Being a guitarist myself I'm into sh*t like that.

I mess around with the guitar too - I think you have to play yourself to really appreciate how incredible the great ones are. I've seen RT several times over the years, both electric and acoustic, and I am more amazed every time at what he does. Glad to find a fellow fan!

He may be great and I will check him out for myself... but the Rolling Stone's list is shit.

I always think lists like that are pretty stupid. They always either focus on technique or uniqueness or how many records they sold. Although having a look at Rolling Stone's list now ...Kurt Cobain at no. 12! (I was a Nirvana fan too) Jack White at no. 17???

Why no Robbie Robertson in the top 25? (he caned Clapton on "Further on up the road" on The Last Waltz) Chuck Berry is higher than Jimmy Page?!

The Edge is a pile of wank who has no business being on there at all.

Finally... Someone loves Robbie Robertson!!! You just made my day. The Band is my favorite group of all time and Robbie gets no respect. He was playing blues revival long before Robert Johnson was released in 1961 and the Rolling Stones etc, jumped on the bandwagon. Still, I think Richard and Garth are the best in the Band.

Jimmy Page is good technically, but Chuck Berry was a pioneer. It is a close battle, but my preference is Chuck Berry.

Maybe the thread should be renamed "The relatively obscure Guitarist appreciation thread."

I'm surprised you didn't go for the first verse of Desolation Row for your NUFC related song Jared, given your display pic.

"They're selling postcards of the hanging
They're painting the passports brown
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors
The circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker
The other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight
From Desolation Row."

I'm also currently listening to BRMC's "Complicated situation" another one that reminds me of NUFC's current plight. (Plus I just love the band and constantly tell everyone of how undervalued they are).

I'll probably take some abuse for this one. But what's the current opinions in the UK about Athlete (http://www.athlete.mu/)? I saw em on London Live's 2007 Year countdown on Mojo. Bought a few of their CDs.

Sorry to have dropped out of the conversation, I took some time off to enjoy the new baby daughter my wife and I just had. :D

The above comments show why its so hard to rank guitar players and, more to the point, why it is a waste of time. You can be innovative and crap, you can be technically amazing and boring as hell. Its all a matter of preference and no matter what you do you will leave off guitar players who should be listed and include those who shouldn't. The reason I listed the Rolling Stone thing about Thompson was just to give him a little cred as I threw his name out, lots of people have unknown guitar heros, I wanted to show that he, at least, has gotten some attention despite being largely unknown. I've always thought Page was over-rated and (warning: heresey to follow) that Clapton is over-rated as well. Robertson is definiatly underrated. Some of my favorite guitar players are nothing special in their abilites, but their playing just hits me right and I enjoy them more than others.

Oh at this point some Yo La Tengo would be appropriate.

Ranking guitar players is an absurd thing to do, but then again leave it to Rolling Stone. Jack White at 17 is fine by me, but I'm in love with the man. And again it's all about uniqueness in this case, and what he is doing for rock and roll currently.

Jimmy Page technically might have been overrated, but again you just get into the stupid argument of ranking guitar players.

I love the KoL album. One of my favorites of this year, but then again I didn't think this was that great of a year for music.

Didn't realize there was quality music being discussed here.

Anyway, just finished downloading The Mountain Goats discography, so I've been listening to them, along with Silver Jews, She & Him, and a few Hold Steady rarities I just found.

Quick name drop here, I'm from a suburb about fifteen minutes away from Detroit, which allows me to be acquaintances with Jack White's nephew.

Hold Steady are cool. Haven't had much of a listen to the other bands you've mentioned but I'll be sure to check them out in more detail.

I don't know about all of you but this time of year when the days are short and the weather is shite, has me reaching for my more depressing music in my collection... probably just makes me worse to be honest. However my Damien Rice always gets a run out at this time of year. I don't know how familiar those of you in America are with him... but the lass he used to sing with has a gorgeous voice. Here's "I Remember" for any of you that may have missed it back a few years...

I gave my friend's band a link on the off topic discussion about 6 months ago. Lanterns on the Lake - click here. (http://www.myspace.com/lanternsonthelake) They're mint in my opinion. Be sure to check out "This Year", "My Shield" and "I will lay you down". This isn't just because 2 of them are my mates by the way, I have mates in sh*t bands.

Their "This Year" would make a brilliant track for a Newcastle United Season Review video on youtube I think.

EDIT: Oh please feel free to youtube any bands you think are worth checking out.

And whilst I'm on about depressing music... any Elliott Smith fans around?
