Back in the days before Netflix, I used to entertain the idea of opening my own video rental place. The gimmick would be that, instead of categorizing films by traditional genres like horror, action/adventure, drama, comedy, etc., I would make up my own clever categories, based on common themes, motifs, or other elements.

For example, just off the top of my head:

Hollywood on Hollywood
Sullivan's Travels
Sunset Boulevard
Living in Oblivion
Mommie Dearest
State and Main
The Player
Swimming with Sharks

Hollywood on TV
Quiz Show
Network
The Truman Show
The Insider
Good Night and Good Luck
Pleasantville
Tootsie

Filmmakers Apologizing Because They Have to Be Assholes for Their Art
Edward Scissorhands (or almost any Tim Burton film...)
New York Stories
Deconstructing Harry
The Life Aquatic (thanks to Matrim55)

We Thought He/She was a Dumb Blonde, But it Turns Out He/She Can Really Act
Boogie Nights (Marky Mark)
L.A. Confidential (Kim Basinger)
Twelve Monkies (Brad Pitt)

Too Quirky to Win Best Picture
Pulp Fiction
the Piano
Raging Bull
the Crying Game
Fargo
Lost in Translation
Taxi Driver
Dog Day Afternoon
MASH
(There are many many more....)

So... Any films to add to these? Any other categories you would make?

You've got to have a category for Big Trouble in Little China. Maybe a Kurt Russel section. That'd be fun. Come'on; who wouldn't love to pick up Overboard and Tango and Cash off of the same shelf?

Kurt could definitely be his own genre. At the same time, many of his films could fit into other genres, such as "So Bad It's Good," or "Campy, or Just Bad?"

Well, that'd be almost all of his work. Except for Stargate. That's just teh awesome. So is Tombstone.

I'm trying to figure out which Scarlett Johannson film belongs here.
