I normally don't get sentimental about movie star deaths, but I feel an inexplicable sense of loss.

Oh my God! :( He's someone I tend to think of as vibrant and full of life. I still see him not as an 83 year old man, but as Butch Cassidy or Hud or Cool Hand Luke. What a great actor, an American Icon, a philanthropist, a true star in every sense of the word.
What a loss for Joanne Woodward. They had such a great marriage.

It really disgusted me a few months back when the National Enquirer had a picture of a sickly, frail Newman on its cover with the headline: "Paul Newman About To Die?" (or some such crap). Of all the people they could have haunted, why Newman? The man was clearly sick and had done nothing in his entire life to warrant that kind of treatment (not that anyone does mind you) so near to the end.
Anyway, RIP to a great actor and a wonderful human being.

It's very strange. I'm of the age where I don't exactly remember him in his prime. I saw some of his 70s films and then just watched him get older and older.
I remember him driving race cars, and then it seemed the next time I looked, he was an old man. Very hard to get used to that.
He did seem to live a full life.

Yeah, my mom loved her some Paul Newman. I think that's the main reason she took me to see "The Towering Inferno" back in '74.
Reggie Dunlop: Oh you cheap son of a bitch. Are you crazy? Those guys are retards!
McGrath: I got a good deal on those boys. The scouts said they showed a lot of promise.
Reggie Dunlop: They brought their f**kin' TOYS with 'em!
What a classic. Tonight, I'm going to have some nachos and some Newman's Own Mango Salsa.
Rest well Mr. Newman.

Damn.
I feel the same way as Gringo... I don't get that upset about movie stars' deaths, but Paul Newman is different.
He packed a lot into his life, between his career, his hobbies, and his philanthropy, right up to the end. When my time comes, that's how I want to go out. RIP Paul.

If you're my age ...mumble50mumble.... you can explain it. You grew up with Newman flicks. His body of work is amazing....

I remember watching him in The Color of Money and thinking..."How the hell can Tom Cruise even think about sharing the same screen? "
The Young Philadelphians, Hud, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Sting....the list goes on and on. Amazing.
