I think I'm a little too young to feel this loss at a deep level. But he was a great man by all accounts. And I'll always love his work in Slap Shot. RIP, Paul. You lived well.

The fall will probably kill ya!

Robert Redford's tribute (http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5hq-RRL8p5132znTOF9L9G8AlE_MQ)
"I have lost a real friend," he added. "My life -- and this country -- is better for his being in it."
"Certain friendships are too good and too strong to talk about."
Very well said, and those quotes separate each other by a number of years.

From the Boston Globe (and a very good read)...
Appreciation: Newman was a rare breed of star (http://www.boston.com/news/local/connecticut/articles/2008/09/27/appreciation_newman_was_among_rare_breed_of_star/)
Speculates rightly that Newman's specific star quality that made him unique couldn't be cultivated in today's Hollywood, with the glaring influence that the tabloid media has in modern culture.
Awesome quote from George Clooney, as well -- "He set the bar too high for the rest of us ... not just actors, but all of us."

Damn.
I feel the same way as Gringo... I don't get that upset about movie stars' deaths, but Paul Newman is different.
He packed a lot into his life, between his career, his hobbies, and his philanthropy, right up to the end. When my time comes, that's how I want to go out. RIP Paul.
I think we all would, quite honestly -- to bring a measure of not what you've done, but what you've left behind for others to emulate and build upon.
And as Mr. Clooney said, Paul Newman raised the bar to a new level, as far as that's concerned.

I was gone all weekend and realized I had miss this thread. I want to echo the sentiments already expressed here about that certain sense of loss his passing instilled.
He was a hell of an actor to watch, and I'll miss him. Godspeed.
