Here's a new drama that seems to have slipped under the radar. I like it, which means it will last 8 episodes of pathetic ratings and then be canned (I'm still desperate for Journeyman DVDs!).

It is like Psych, except that it is nothing like Psych. It's about a former fake psychic (as if there are any other kinds) who suffered a family tragedy and has turned his abilities of observation towards helping a California state task force in charge of hunting serial murderers, especially one named Red John. The Mentalist joins House as one of the few shows to be centered on an atheist. Like House, Patrick is manipulating and self-confident but he is also very charming. There may be some fun interaction in the future with the new member of the team who is a fundy who believes in speaking with the dead.

the first episode was alright... although i missed the first 20 minutes. i'll probably keep watching because i like his co-star. i can't be bothered to find her name... she was linc's girlfriend/lawyer in the first season of prison break. i totally dig her for some reason.

I dig her as well though I can't really figure out why.

Regardless, I liked the first show. It is just like Psych except that he doesn't pretend to be a psychic anymore and is very anti-psychic. Regardless, they still do the same stuff.

I also think that they need to keep explaining his rationale behind all of his reads on people. They were pretty entertaining.

Hey, ratings were actually pretty good (more than twice Knight Rider). It might stick around for a while.

However, it requires good writers to keep it clever and not fall into lame pop psychology. I hope they can keep it up.

I think I liked this show better the first time I saw it... you know, when they called it Monk.

I prefer the 2nd variation better, Psych. In that one he actually pretends to be a psychic though.

I don't think The Mentalist is anything like Monk or Psych. Psych is about the friendships and relationships between the major characters, Monk is about... well, I don't get Monk. The Mentalist is a CBS crime procedural, like Criminal Minds or CSI, just with an interesting hook that draws on the century old detective stories rather than modern science or sociology.

Oh, and let me add that the rock-paper-scissors scene was excellent. When playing against a novice, the "scissor sandwich" (paper-scissors-paper) is almost always a winner for the first three moves.

Sorry to bump an old thread...but did anyone else catch the reference in Psych (jan. 30th episode - the American football episode) to The Mentalist? I love it when a show acknowledges that someone has essentially ripped off the same story idea.

yes, i started out on the show being a big fan of the lead chick, but i've definitely taken note of the young detective. her only problem is her constant use of those HUGE belts, and for some reason, that drives me batshit crazy. it really lowers her overall hotness.
