Are they playing the usual preliminary round with 8 groups of 4 format this year with the 8 winners moving on to the knockout stages? Boy, I hate that format. Wipes out just about any Cinderella teams right away.

Napoli - Salernitana (ore 20.45)

Wow, this one should be a real doozy. Don't these fans hate each other?

Ugh, it is how I feared. However, these groups canNOT have been drawn randomly. They appear to have been set up geographically. Besides the Napoli-Salernitana matchup mentioned, Genoa and Samp are together, Palermo and Messina, etc etc. Is this a new concept for this competition?

No huge surprises here although that first one is a little eyecatching (AlbinoLeffe over Venezia). FYI, I think AlbinoLeffe is a club that resulted from a combination of the clubs from Albino and Leffe, hence the capitalalized second L. Just a tidbit I remember from looking on my map of Italy for the locations of all the clubs last year during a slow work period. :)

Livorno over Cagliari is another little upset. And another tidbit: Roberto Donadoni is the coach of Livorno.

Thanks, I wasn't aware Donadoni was managing.

I haven't looked for line-ups but it seems some of these teams don't take the Cup seriously. With a UEFA Cup spot at hand I would have thought otherwise.

None of these teams has a chance in hell of winning the Coppa and getting that UEFA Cup berth, and they know it. It's unfortunate, but the format of the Coppa - these brutal early rounds, home and home, etc - make a "Cinderella" winner from outside of Serie A virtually impossible. Okay, there are a couple of Serie A teams playing in this round - Reggina, for instance. But for teams like that, survival in Serie A is their ONLY goal this season.

Unfortunately, the Coppa is a minor competition in Italy.

I disagree a bit Sue. For teams like Roma, Inter, Juve and Milan they dont take it too seriously, I agree. But for the mid table A teams and below they do.

Parma always does well in this competetion because they tend to play the first team instead of the B or C. A few years back when Fiorentina was doing well in A, Venezia who was bottom table A, came into Franchi and won the game, thus eliminating la Viola. Fiorentina was unrecognizable except for Chiesa (who played the worst match ever in the history or football).

Example again is the Pistoiese - Empoli match. Both teams are perennial serie B squads and as well as neighbors here in Tuscany. So its like a Derby match to them. You'll see a lot of these types in the early rounds. (insert the new Fiorentina vs Pisa tie here)

That all being said, I do agree however that it is quite impossible to have the Union Berlin's of the world to make the final match because of the 2-leg format.

For some of the mid-table teams, there is interest. Parma and (old) Fiorentina were always good "cup" teams. And individual matches that are derby games, or lower division teams playing a Serie A team - yes, those can draw interest.

But the top teams and the strugglers, for the most part, don't especially care, and anybody in Serie B or C is out after the first two rounds.

Replacing Osvaldo Jaconi !?!?

Wow, Forza Livorno!, I had no idea he was coaching. Now I know who to bring up as possible replacements for the current MetroStars manager ;)
