So here's the deal: we're drafting calendar years based on the quality of movies that came out that year. This would cover the years from 1895 to 2007, for 113 selections on the board.

My thinking is you select a year and then pick up to 10 movies from that year. At the end, we vote on who has the best pool of movies.

Thoughts?

You're probably right, V_C, this one is way too esoteric for me.

1939 -- The year both GWTW and Wizard of Oz came out. And that about exhausts my knowledge of movies and their years...

Is there some webpage that explains which movies came out in which years? I mean it could take ages on IMDB and AFI to figure this stuff out.

IMDB has films broken down by year.

I'm in, btw.

EDIT: How are we determining what year the film is from? US release date?

Maybe I am missing it. I know that it has the following information: The year the movie was made and a ranking of the top vote getters by decade. But I haven't seen a top votegetters by year?

Am I missing it?

I say we go by IMDB. If its in error on a particular film, we can discuss.

Yes, this is indeed the most famous "movie year" in film history, although IMO, for all the wrong reasons.

Count me in if this gets any more interest and takes off.

Throw me in. I'll dazzle you all for 8 rounds and then go ahead and pick 1943 to undo everything, citing some of the most unspeakably faux-pas shite imaginable as a testament to what a great year it was.

Why? Because a draft is like poker - you need an image/presence. :o

Personally I think the years should probably be restricted from 1912 (possibly 1913 or even as late as 1914) up to the present. That is, unless anyone other than GringoTex or myself wants to go about picking films from the non-feature period of 1895-1912. Good luck with that. That leaves us with roughly 92-94 years with which to work. This means that we should really only be restricting this draft to around 8 people. So far, there are six (?) of us.

I'm excited by what people will pick though. Should be fun to argue about.

The movie drafts took a lot of my time and this would take way more which I don't really have right now with what's going on in my job (financial industry).

I will however happily follow along and give my approval or disapproval of picks!

Well, it might not be a bad idea to do 8 rounds of 10 posters then, if there is an interest from one or two others. Less than 8 rounds would probably be a little skimpy, but I figue it is a decent enough number if we need to sacrifice to let a few others in. Suggestions?

Does anyone want to share a team?

Probably too much of a time commitment for me to take on by myself.

Are you kidding? I'll restrict myself only to films from 1895 - 1913.

You'll probably ignore the 1895-1913 equivalents of Agnes Varda, Catherine Breillat, Kira Muratova, and Ida Lupino as well. :p

I'm also not kidding because I imagine the majority of BS posters are neither former cinema grad students like yourself, nor silent dorks like yours truly. I guess that doesn't mean that 1895-1913 shouldn't be options though if people want them (and 1913 is home to one of my all time favorite films).
