The league, not to mention the U.S. national team, needs more players like Joseph, described as a top-class player and person by nearly everyone. By representing Grenada in qualifying competitions for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, he lost any chance of playing for the United States, which he could do by gaining U.S. citizenship.
"I was just thinking about it today, being around the players," he said a day before lining up for the All-Star Game. "It is probably one of my biggest regrets. I regret I didn't get a chance to play with the United States.

Sadly for Joseph if he'd have play for the US he would have gotten a great platform to transfer the hell out of NE before he signed that extension. That's a lot of cheddar he left on the table.

I met Dr. Masur a couple of years ago and I asked him about Shalrie and Grenada. Shalrie never envisioned himself getting to this level and being a candidate for the US squad. Masur tried to talk him out of going to Grenada and committing to them Internationally.
Sure would've looked good as a SINGLE DM in the US midfield.

I wonder if the path of somebody like Jeff Cunningham had an impact on Joseph's decision. Cunningham probably could have played more for Jamaica than the US (particularly from 2002 on.)

I'd still take Jeff over some of the stiffs we run out there (ahem, Johnson, Wolff).

This thread title is SO misleading.
We never had a shot at Shalrie Joseph. He was cap-tied to Grenada before he became a pro and before he became a US citizen.
That Shalrie doesn't play for the US is because he chose not to wait till he got US citizenship. I know that as of 2 years ago, Joseph still didn't have US citizenship; he may have it now but I can't say for certain.
Regardless, there was nothing the USSF could have done to keep his US-eligible since he was never a US citizen when he wasn't cap-tied to Grenada.

Not a chance. He'd be fighting with Edu, Rico Clark, and I guess Pablo for a job. So truth is, I'm not sure how much he would actually play.

When Joseph accepted the chance to play for Grenada he was completely off the US radar...............at the time not many people would have predicted his current level of success. He was at Bryant & Stratton college for two years, which is kind-of a 2-year junior college in Syracuse. The idea that somebody enrolled at B&S would end up as a possible USMNT player in this day and age is a hell of a longshot. He went from there to St. John's, and his career kind of took off from there. But he was so far off the radar from the USMNT establishment (and rightly so), that it's no surprise the he accepted the Grenanda opportunity.
I don't blame the USSF for this one, and I don't blame Shalrie for not waiting for the USMNT call. He was an incredibly late bloomer.

I think he would have made our World Cup 2006 roster.

I think he would have been a fixture in the starting lineup in qualification and in the World Cup itself.

Didn't intend to mislead with the title - it's the first I've read of Joseph speaking about what could have been with the US.
Technically, his coaches could have persuaded him to wait it out a few more years before playing for Grenada of all places ;)

Your point? He would be are best center mid!!! I really think, Joseph, Edu, Brad, and Pablo are almost on the same level, but I believe Joseph would be the best option.

Mike plays over him and the $5 million Eurocool Edu plays over him. Shalrie watches and hopes somebody gets injured.

He would have started over Michael Bradley because Bruce would have played him at World Cup '06. Bruce always coveted Shalrie.
Shalrie and Pablo as twin anchor mids would be pretty bad-ass.

]We can't play with single DM as the DM of ours can't play DM alone.
