This is just something that has been on my mind of late. How many shots does the US need to score a goal? Here is some general data I've collected from the US' matches in 2003, just out of my own curiosity. It turns out the US' ability to finish largely depends on what opponent they are playing that day. Anyway, take a look. It might be interesting, it might be completely boring and meaningless. Just throwing it out there...

Opponent_Name USG USS USP OPG OPS OPP
Costa_Rica 3 10 30% 2 6 33%
Brazil 1 7 14% 2 16 13%
Paraguay 2 13 15% 0 12 0%
Cameroon 0 7 0% 0 7 0%
Brazil 0 6 0% 1 13 8%
Turkey 1 9 11% 2 9 22%
Mexico 0 4 0% 0 7 0%
Argentina 0 11 0% 1 8 13%
N_Zealand 2 18 11% 1 6 17%
Wales 2 12 17% 0 7 0%
Venezuela 2 20 10% 0 10 0%
Jamaica 2 7 29% 1 10 10%
Canada 4 11 36% 0 9 0%
Martinique 2 13 15% 0 3 0%
Cuba 5 14 36% 0 2 0%
El_Salvador 2 10 20% 0 10 0%
2003_TOTALS 28 172 16% 10 135 7%
WC_Opponents 7 67 10% 8 78 10%
Non_WC_Opp 21 105 20% 2 57 4%
Concacaf_Opp 18 69 26% 3 47 6%

Key
USG = USA Goals
USS = USA Shots
USP = USA Percentage of shots that were scored

OPG = Opponent Goals

No surprise at all. It tells us nothing more than what we should have expected anyway:

1) Teams that qualify for the World Cup tend to have better defenses and better goalkeepers than teams that don't.

2) Teams that qualify for the World Cup tend to finish better than teams that don't.

3) We're better than almost all of our CONCACAF opponents.

The title of this thread is subject to another interpretation, which is not pleasant. If possible, I would like the mods to change it.
