I just noticed that since 2003/2004 when Celtic Qualified for the Group stage of the UEFA Cup after losing to Porto in the final the year before none of the finalists after them have made the group stage of the UEFA Cup (or Champions League Group for that matter)

2008 - Rangers crash out in UEFA cup qualifying
2007 - Espanyol do not qualify for Europe
2006 - Middlesboro do not qualify for Europe
2005 - Sporting fail in Champions League qualifying then fail in UEFA cup Qual.
2004 - Marseille do not qualify for Europe.

Long story short don't lose the UEFA Cup Final otherwise you go into European Limbo.

Or better, manage your qualification for CL
before the UEFA-cup final has been played. ;)

a lot of those smaller clubs overextend themselves with focusing on the European run and then can't keep it up in their regular league, thus leading to failure to qualify for Europe

no excuse for Rangers though

You can make that excuse only for Boro and Espanyol. But Espanyol didn't lose 1 game in Europe not even the final (Extra time) They ended up with the highest coefficient points the year they went to the final. So if they were that good they should of been able to compete in La Liga.

Boro wll they are mid level EPL but the years leading up to their final appearence I believe they were regulars in the UEFA cup.
