View Full Version : A take on CONCACAF at club level for Europeans?

Hi.
I've thought for a while about how best I could describe CONCACAF at club level to fellow Europeans, based on what I've been able to pick up on so far.
From what I see, one way of describing it would be to compare the Mexican league to Spain's La Liga - with a fair number of high quality clubs, and two media powerhouses, though with less on-field dominance in the modern day than the big two in Spain would have.
Then, I was thinking of comparing Costa Rica, or Central America as a whole, to Portugal - with two or three big clubs that can compete on a regional level (with Saprissa and Alajualense akin to Benfica and F.C. Porto) but with weaker domestic leagues than those of their larger neighbours.
Not quite sure who would be the best comparison to the Caribbean clubs, though.
And as for MLS? I'd say the early days of the EPL, after the long ban of English clubs from UEFA competition, before it evolved into the big money-machine it is at present - and before the top teams in the league actually figured out how to win against the likes of Juventus, AC Milan and so forth.
(It might be hard to picture if you only know the EPL as it is now, but growing up in Ireland, where Premiership coverage is about as widespread as it is in England, I remember the struggles that the likes of Man United had to deal with when being exposed to Europe's finest in the early and mid nineties.)
Can you think of better comparisons?

I would have thought that Benfica or Porto (maybe Benfica, since Saprissa play in Costa Rica's capital) or Ajax (who have won 4 European Cups (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_Cup_and_UEFA_Champions_League_winners#Results_by_teams)) would be closer fits, no?

Caribbean teams akin to Belgian, Serbian, Hungarian or similar smaller eastern european leagues, a few teams are good enough to get to the group stages sometimes, where they are frequently the doormats but once every blue moon one can go the distance, see Red Star Belgrade.

Well, given that Bayern have also won 4 European Cups, and happen to play in Germany, why would Saprissa be treated differently to the rest of CR?

That might work, thanks.

.
check the international club results for the last 15 years my friend, saprissa dominates the CRn league, the centroamerican clubs and the MLS teams as well
so IMO saprissa and the Mexican clubs are above the rest in concacaf

Aguila feated denmark a few years ago.
Europe not only have money but tradition and power... it will be really hard to compete, sp Italian, Spanish and PPEpl, they have waaaay too much money.
We could prob compare our soccer to crappy teams like norway, finland and all the rest european leagues.

Just to clarify, I'm not asking about the absolute level of CONCACAF teams and leagues compared to those in UEFA - I am asking about the relative positions of the leagues within their respective regions.
So please try not to turn this into a PDM vs La Liga argument, if that's ok with you...

well i would have to say that the mexican league is like the italian league they are solid but they dont dominate the other countries. america=inter chivas= roma
After that the Mls is like the eresvines(idk how its called but the one in holland) both very underrated leagues
most teams are very even in both leagues. N.E revs=ajax
Honduras league IMO is the best in central america and is like the russian league. They are both growing. Olimpia=zenit marathon= spartak moscow motagua=CSK moscow
the league in costa rica is like the french league.they both have very good teams in the region.Lyon=saprissa
Caribbean teams are like teams from sweden ukraine and belgium they can surprise some big teams.

Ill say that the mexican league is like the Spanish, they have the best south american players.
Costa Rican is like the Italian league, they are not the best but they are solid.
MLS is like EPL, ping pong soccer.
Salvi is prob like Bundesliga, not the best but we have history. 3 Salvi teams have been CCC Champions ;)
