Does anyone know the full draw procedure for the Confederations Cup. I know South Africa is in Group A as team #1. How are the pots. I heard a rumor that the post would be divided like this.

Pot 1
-Italy
-Spain

Pot 2
- Brazil
- USA

Pot 3
- Iraq
- New Zealand

Pot 4
- Egypt (automatically goes into Pool B)

Potential Draw

Group A
South Africa
Spain
USA
Iraq

Group B
Italy
Brazil
New Zealand
Egypt

Not sure if anything else has been released publicly, but the competition regulations say:

The FIFA Organising Committee will divide the teams into groups by seeding and drawing lots in public, taking into account geographic and sporting considerations. The host country, South Africa, will be seeded as team A1 and play in the opening match. You can read a lot into that.

In the past, the defending WC champion and the host have been in opposite groups. And "geographic considerations" would dictate no teams from the same confederations in the same group.

So, to start, you have:

Group 1
South Africa
Spain

Group 2
Italy
Egypt

That leaves Brazil, US, Iraq and New Zealand. One would tend to think (for either sporting OR geographic considerations), that the USA and Brazil will be in one pot and Iraq and New Zealand in the other. So, other than the order of matches, you end up with only the four possible scenarios:

Group 1
South Africa
Spain
USA
New Zealand

Group 2
Italy
Egypt
Brazil
Iraq

Group 1
South Africa
Spain
USA
Iraq

Group 2
Italy
Egypt
Brazil
New Zealand

Group 1
South Africa
Spain
Brazil
Iraq

Group 2
Italy
Egypt
USA
New Zealand

Group 1
South Africa
Spain
Brazil
New Zealand

Group 2
Italy
Egypt
USA
Iraq

Thanks for the breakdown. I appreciate it. I would like to see the US-Iraq drawn into the same group. That would be interesting and dra more interest in the game from U.S. media kind of like the recent Cuba match did.

Except for them failing to make it into the Asia final round.

They've obviously been good, but also had problems. Hard to know how much of that is war related, but I'd think it'd be a lot.

It's possible that things will have settled down there by next summer and their team will be able to better focus on the game.

To be honest, I'm cool with either team in our group.

I especially love the look of this group:

South Africa
Spain
USA
New Zealand

Spain has an off day, and we could actually win that group, even as bad as we appear to be right now.

That's a great group, for the WC it can get even better

South Africa
"minor" UEFA team ("worst" UEFA team to qualify)
USA
New Zealand

I still believe and hope that fifa put the two weakest confederations (AFC & CONCACAF) in one pot.

Assuming Argentina will be seeded:

Pot 1 & Pot 2 clear

Pot 3: 3 COMNBEBOL + 5 CAF

Pot 4: 3 CONCACAF + 5 AFC

or if CONCACAF 4th wins vs COMNEBOL 5tH

Pot 3: 2 COMNBEBOL + 5 CAF

Pot 4: 3/4 CONCACAF + 5/4 AFC

Special pot: the weakest(or strongest?) CONCACAF/AFC Team

I don't know in which order they draw from the pots, but if it's from 1 to 4, then the special pot team should be placed in the remaining group with only two teams, after pot 3 was drawn. So it would be better if it was the strongest CONCACAF/AFC Team.

So we either have
South Africa, UEFA, strongest CONCACAF/AFC, AFC/CONCACAF
or
South Africa, UEFA, COMNEBOL, CONCACAF/AFC

that's the only method to balance group A a little.

Dude. This is the confederation cup draw not the World cup draw.

It sure is.

Group A

South Africa
Spain

Group B

Italy
Egypt

then i think ether will be just one pot with the remaining 4 teams of New Zealand USA Iraq Brazil

or

one pot with the american teams of USA and Brazil and another with the Asian Pacific (AFC/OFC nations) Iraq New Zealand.

------------------------

Random prediction

1.USA
2.Spain
-------
3.Iraq
4.South Africa

1.Italy
2.Brazil
-------
3.Egypt
4.New Zealand

Semis
Brazil to beat the USA
Italy to beat USA

3rd
USA to beat Spain

Final
Brazil to beat Italy.

--------------

Never been done before is the team that wins the Confederations cup win the world cup the year later which i think may happen. I am thinking Brazil or Spain for the trebble but think Brazil got a better chance for the trebble
CONMEBOL Copa America 2007; FIFA Confederations Cup 2009; FIFA World Cup 2010.

thats only because it hasn't happened yet. the same can be applied with the sun.

if the sun is up today it will never not be up tomorrow.

just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean that it is a given law. idiot.

hey it was a joke mister. But seriously I never appreciated the idea of this cup. It's useless, countless and it ruins the "surprise" of the wc atmhosphere. It just gives a possibility to a soccer-nerd to say "I can remember every single team who played in conf. cup and every winner".

I'll take matches italy plays there as friendlies

sorry, internet isn't exactly the best place to be able to desipher humor from seriousness. on the net it is a lot more important on what you say, not how you say it.

thats what the tournament pretty much is. a big friendly. it gives the host country a glimpse as to what its going to be like, and gives those teams the opportunity to play against world class competition.

This is how equate this tournament with club/country.

Confederations Cup = Domestic Cup i.e. Coppa Italia, F.A. Cup, Copa del Ray
Continental Cup i.e. Euros, Copa America = League title i.e. La Liga, Serie A, EPL
World Cup = Champions League

No I'm no way comparing a Champions League title to a World Cup title, but on a club level winning the Champions League is the ultimate prize. I think taking all matches serious is a necessity. I doubt you'd be happy if Italy went out and lost all three of their matches to for example Iraq, Egypt, and USA.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Italy either withdrew or brought a totally experimental team (there are also rumors about a soccer four-nation friendly tournament to take place in France in June 2009 between Spain, Italy, France and Germany...).

Nobody would care if Italy went 3 and out at the Confederation Cup, I doubt it's even televised here, certainly it isn't on free terrestrial TV.

I highly doubt that any country would ever withdraw. As it brings bad publicity on the tournament and or the game. But I don't think they are gonna bring their A squad. I'd look for a team similar to the one they brought to the olympics plus a few of the regulars.

Perhaps very few here are into geography. But so that you know, I will mention that there is an intriguing geographical possibility in the Confed Cup.

If Spain plays New Zealand, we would have an ANTIPODES matchup. Namely 2 countries that are diametrically opposite each other on the planet. In other words, if you run a line from Spain through the center of the earth, it will come out in New Zealand.

No i'm sure Rai Uno will transmict at least all the Italy matches. But you're right: none would care if italy went out with 3 loss :D
