View Full Version : Is Rodolfo Zelaya El Salvador's new Striker??

Twenty years old and an incessant knack for scoring goals, many were worried when - after 5 senior national team caps for El Salvador yielded no goals. Zelaya addressed any lingering concerns this past Saturday vs. Haiti. The young pacy striker hit for the first three goals of the game hurting chances any hopes the 2007 Caribbean Champions, Haiti, had for advancing. Haiti didn't help their own cause after seeing defender Pierre Bruny sent off in the 13th minute. Zelaya has the eyes and ears of the region after that game and there's a good chance he'll add more as a match-up with Suriname looms tomorrow (recently 7-0 losers to Group C leaders Costa Rica). With their trouncing of Haiti, El Salvador looks to be overwhelming favorites to advance. La Azul have not seen a potent goalscorer in some time - could Zelaya be the newest? El Salvador has had a go-to man for almost every decade except this past one - Jose Maria Rivas in the 80s, Raul Diaz Arce in the 90s. Could Zelaya be El Salvador's offensive hope for 2008 onward?
I didnt see the game but i saw some highlights and he seemed pretty good, so what do u guys think??

The kid is good, but we can't make assumptions in just one game!!!!!!!!!! we gota give it a few games..........we will see what happens tomorrow and versus Costa Rica!!!!!! i thought he played well....his very young and has alot of potential...next Diaz Arce...its a little hard to say right now!!!!!!!

He's a good player but i still rate Corrales higher than him. Although i wouldn't be surprised to see him take Corrales spot in the future as he (Corrales) is now getting older and Zelaya is still pretty young. But yeah i agree with spanishfan in that it's to early to be saying he's our new Diaz Arce. Like i said, he's a good player but at the moment i think it's far to early to be saying he's anything more than that. Give him a couple more years and then we'll see how he goes.
Also, on a side note, i think we could have had this discussion in the El Salvador thread. No need to be making so many threads, when it can easily have been placed in our current national team one. Just a thought.

Agreed.
Hopefully Zelaya can continue to get better he has a bright future. However let's not forget Andres Flores...he has massive potential aswell.

he was compared to Diaz Arce by la mara.
I think he could be better than RDA but at this moment he is not, i want to do better though, it is about time we produce another good forward bc Rudy will be there forever.
If he train to better himself, he could do great, if he gets spoiled by the media he will end up like the next paleta! I though Paleta was going to go to Europe, but the salvi press made him a superstar and he was flying waaay too high.
Ill like to see Zelaya doing good, maybe making a big move to Aguila can help ;)

If he keeps it up, and gets a chance to go to MLS. In acouple years he can go to EUrope by the the time he is 25. He has to score more goals in this round to show he has consistancy. El Salvador has SUriname and C.R at home, and next game at haiti. EL Salvador has to win at haiti, a 1-0 will be fine. He chance will be against Suriname at home. He will never have such a chance to make a name for himself. Like we saw "el Paleta " go blank in the last uncaf, if Zelaya blanks in the next 3 games, I will have a second thought of him.

Paleta is still aroud and people is still asking for him to go back to la selecta, i personally would like to see paleta, murgas and el pega back, they have more experience, they are not children anymore, they are machos probados.
As far as Zelaya, he can dribble better than RDA but he still has to work on his left foot and he has to show what he can do vrs bigger and better opponent, Costa Rica would be a good test for him. If he does well vrs Costa Rica then he could prob do good in MLS or somewhere in Europe, i doubt he could compete at a South American level yet. Remember also that if he goes to Mexico he will have to be fighting for an spot vrs south americans too.
Zelaya could prob get a chance in MLS or Costa Rica, maybe in a country like norway or finland he could o alrite bc they are not very skilled in those countries.

Pega staright up sucks..... good Ball control, way below average shot, ok crosser not physical at all. He is one of the reason we got spanked in Ecuador.
Murgas- Maybe, but we are deep at defensive mid but can fight for a spot I believe. It would between him and Osael's, Jimenez, and Sanchez for minutes. I am extremely happy with Ramon Sanchez's performance. If we have injuries he can help though.
Paleta- extremely unlikely, you see, he stoped scoring goals in the league now too. He looks fast, scores well on the run. He is not a BOX DANGER MAN FINISHER. And that is what we need.

and also he has a harder shot, I saw that shot he took against CR, but it went high, but I could sence his power. He is strong.

Raul was a pure striker, he could score with his right, left, and head. Fito has a lot of goal scoring to do before he is to be compared with Raul Diaz Arce.

Diaz Arce was just bigger and stronger, if you ever seen Juan Pablo Angel playing, that is the way Diaz Arce used to be.
Paleta is a baller, his ego is prob too big but he is better def a baller. What happens with Paleta is that he is too selfish, he wants everybody to pass him the ball, and he complains too much, he is still a great striker thought, I think he hates the fact that Cheyo is around, he likes all the attention for him.
Pega is not a bad option to be on the bench.
Murgas is more creative than a denfensive mid, think of Murgas as Chavy, great pass, great vision, sometimes slow but he has great experience.
Im hoping DCL to get the best men for the hex, there is not old or young players, there is good and bad, if Chamba has a chance, I dont see why Pega, Murgas or Paleta shouldnt!

One main reason for that, might be because he's been injured for almost a month now, add to that the fact that he began the season playing off the bench.
It's really unlucky to he got injured though, as he began the season really well scoring two crackers v FAS in round 2.
I'm all for giving him another chance in the national team though. But it depends how well he recovers from his injury. As for Murgas, i think he could do well, but there are good players already in our mid, so he'd probably be on the bench. And Dubon is WAY overrated. I mean 5-4 years ago, he was a really good player, but if you've seen him recently, he's not ha;f as good now as he was back then. Definatly not good enough to play inthe national team, IMO.

Agree with you for the most part. Except i've never been a fan of Paleta, he is rubbish in the NT i think our NT is good enough to keep the same squad.

I like keeping the same squad, and I like Castillo feeding Zelaya up top. Those two play really well together. If you noticed during the Suriname game, they had good chemistry and created chances, but they didn't define...i'm sure that they'll have other chances, and I'm sure they'll capitalize.
So is Zelaya the next big striker? I think so. DLC has been careful in preparing him, though he might bench him a couple of more times, eventually he'll be a solid starter. Still, he needs to sub for Rudis just a few more times. It's a slow process of preparation, but if it's done right, then we have ourselves a future standout.

Oh yeah, i agree completely.
The team we have right now is fine as it is, and there's really no need to change things. But i was more so just giving my opinion on whether those three would be good options for the national team.
I think at this stage, we shouldn't be bringing in any new players into the group until after this round of qualifying. If we make it to the Hex, then i'd be open to play new players like Murgas and Erazo in friendlies, just to see how they go. But then again i wouldn't expect either of them to come straight into the starting lineup.

Agreed.
I wouldn't mind them in friendlies, but in the HEX i would have to say no. The team was great chemistry right now, and i don't want any new guys coming in and messing it up. Not that they will, but just by a chance.

THey are not new though, they've worked the De lOs cobos system as well, and you guys know depth is money in the final hex. Who knows, what if we have Jimenez, and Sanchez out on card, and ROmero injured, then who do we have. at that point the may be usefull as a sub. Definately murgas can be pluged in automatically.
However I see no room for Paleta. He is 8th or 9th in la selectas attaker depth list.
1. Corrales
2.Reyes
3.Zelaya
4.Larios
5.Quintanilla
6.Castillo
