Now that the World Cup 2010 European Qualifiers are under way, keep a personal record of the scores and table positions with this spreadsheet.

Say a little prayer for Wales too :o

Nice spreadsheet.

I have a question, both in UEFA and Africa, there is a situation where some (but not all) of the second place teams advance to the next round of qualification.

But some groups have a different number of teams.

My question is, what are the criteria for determining the 8 of 9 best second place teams (or 8 of 12 in Africa)? Points seems unfair (# of teams not equal). I clicked on the PDF on FIFA World Cup, but it provided no information.

Does anyone have a link for this process, and/or tiebreakers?

EDIT: OK, Africa spells theirs out, UEFA is silent.

Wales weren't disgraced at all in the end. We played well in the second half and scored a nice goal. Playing Russia away from home would be a difficult match for anybody, but for a nation of our size, it borders on the cruel. However i'm proud of the guys after our first two results. We seem to have a good young team emerging. Who knows, if we have a run like we did under Hughes, we could finally qualify for a major tournament in my lifetime lol.

It's the same in both, drop the results against the last place team.

Wouldn't that be wonderful!

The table is filling up now and Wales are still there with the big guns. Germany on the 15th.

Well done Wales! A sterling performance in defence kept the score to 1 - 0 against a German side 58 places above them in the world rankings. Any suggestions for beefing up the attack?

We have got until 28th March 2009 to get it sorted!

Watch Wayne Rooney on his day and you will see his incredible passion and his bewildering talent. Never can he be accused of not having heart.
Manchester United have suffered several defeats this season. On each occasion they have lost, they were without Rooney.

Outstanding.

If you want to build a simpler version for the other confederations, much appreciated.

GET READY TO RUMBLE! Here it is again, the spreadsheet to keep a track of all the World Cup 2010 European Qualifier scores and tables. Now fully updated.

Looks good. I think it's time to start paying attention to the best second place teams table.

Ok, I was messing around with and I projected all the rest of the games. I noticed that it says "go to the playoffs" for the top 8 point getters after the group winners, not the top 8 second place teams like it is in reality.

I think Group 9 doesn't have a team that is capable of second place!

I think you may be right. Let me check it through again. When I wrote it last year it was unclear about how the play off contenders would be decided. As you mention, if it is just a case of the highest score then group 9 is seriously disadvantaged because they play 2 games less! IŽll get back to you in time for the point when it becomes important.

It's the top 8 second place teams, throwing away the results against the last place team for groups 1-8.

Indeed! I have now readjusted the calculation of the play-off teams, so that all the last place team games and points are disregarded in groups with 6 teams (1-8):

http://cid-b6212155f8f699d3.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Files%204%20U/World%20Cup%202010%20European%20Qualifiers%20Unprotected%20Version.xls

In my spreadsheet, the ranking of the 1st and 2nd teams and play-off teams only goes as far as the goal difference. It is in fact very complicated beyond that. From the FIFA site:

Group 9 consists of five teams, one less than the other pools. When calculating the best runners-up, therefore, matches played against the sixth-placed finishers in Groups 1 to 8 will not be taken into consideration. The criteria will be as follows;
- Total points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Goals scored away from home
- Disciplinary record *
- Drawing of lots
* Yellow card, -1 point; two yellow cards in the same match, -3 points; red card, -3 points; yellow card followed by a direct red card in the same match, -4 points.

I have all the figures in the spreadsheet I need to go down to goals scored away from home, so if it looks like a possibility I will update the spreadsheet if I have the time and willpower!

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Folks

I just couldn't rest until I had got it right. So here it is, hopefully working well, ranking the teams by points, goal difference, goals for, and goals away for tables and play-offs:

Let me know if you find any glitches.

I have added the latest batch of games (another gloomy day for Wales) as well as a new page to monitor the Play-Off situation. Don't forget, the Play-Offs are determined by ignoring all points from the games against the bottom placed team. This cannot be determined with certainty until all the games are in, but you can get a little bit excited by seeing your team in the Play-Off zone.

Enjoy

I still get 3rd place teams going to the playoffs.
