http://www.hexagonalblog.com/2008/09/developing-concacaf-clubcountry-coefficients.html uses a formula to make the following ranking for the last five years:
1. Deportivo Saprissa
2. CF Pachuca
3. DC United*
4. LD Alajuelense
5. Club América
6. CF Monterrey*
7. Houston Dynamo*
8. UNAM
9. Toluca FC
10. Chivas Guadalajara
I marked the teams that did not make a Champions Cup final during that time with a *. All 10 of those teams have made at least one semifinal appearance during that time.
Using a point system of 10 for first down to 1 for tenth, Mexican clubs have 26 points, Costa Rican clubs have 17, and American (MLS) clubs have 12.
The most recent Champions Cup finalists not from Mexico or Costa Rica were Los Angeles Galaxy and CD Olimpia in 2000. Before 2000 you have to go back to 1988 to find the last time neither finalist was from Mexico or Costa Rica.

Agreed. I think most Dynamo fans would tell you that they'd rather play any FMF team instead of Saprissa.

Cool stuff.
I look solely at results from the Champions' Cup and its preliminary competitions (Copa UNCAF, CFU Club Championship) over the past five years.

The thing is, almost no one but Mexican teams really did partake in the CL & the Copa Sudamericana. CONMEBOL has invited Saprissa 3 times so far since 2005 but CONCACAF keeps blocking us for the benefit of others. I know it might sound unorthodox but we can't use the MFL's results in CONMEBOL simply because they are not from our confederation.
In CONCACAF's case, this rankings will just mean who has been the best team in our tournaments.
The only two competitions we got is the CCC & the CWC. If we were talking about who has been the best team in CONCACAF competitions in the past 5 years, Saprissa clearly is. Saprissa has been to 3 CCC finals out of the past 5 tournaments, won it once and got a third place at the CWC.
As far as overall, just wait until Saprissa plays the Copa Sudamericana and we can see how we fare against Boca Jrs, Vasco de Gama, America de Cali, etc. But if we were to use an overall system, no MLS team would be in the top 10.

The deal with Saprissa is they are the only CR team halfway good.
FMF is full of contenders that can do good at anytime.

Well, Alajuelense are going down but we got 3 other teams that are coming up real fast and have been a hard challenge to Saprissa (Brujas, Herediano & Liberia Mia). If we would get the 3 slots in the CCL that we deserve, you will see it yourself. They are not like Puntarenas who had a very good year and then went down to mediocrity. They are, no kidding, good teams not afraid of anyone i.e. Brujas started their preseason beating a bunch of Argentinian teams in Buenos Aires. And I, as a Saprissista, like this this since it raises the level of competitiveness in our league and I can say, with full confidence, we got 4-5 teams capable of winning our league now, not just 2.
As far as the Mexican teams, they can be the best, if not one of the best, in the entire American continent at anytime but it is like they are good one year, mediocre the next, and then they suck the year after. And the cycle repeats itself. That is probably due to the level of competitiveness in the league.
Since 2003, only Monterrey, Pachuca, and Atlante has been MFL champions of either Clausura or Apertura more then once. The others have been one time pony shows.

Isn't it Saprissa always in those tournaments though? it's hard to come up with a ranking considering most mexican teams won't even repeat in the tournament

There's nothing here to see folks.

DC's done OK in international competitions in the past 5 years. That's why they're up there. In the 2007 CCC they beat Olimpia twice, and drew with Chivas at home in the semis. In the 2007 Superliga they beat America and drew with Monarcas. In the 2007 Copa Sudamericana they beat Chivas at home. In the 2008 CCC they beat Pachuca at home. In the 2008 CCL they drew with Saprissa.
They've had some bad results against Mexican clubs (especially in this year's tournaments), but at home at least they can be tough to play. The best example of that is when they drew with Pumas 1-1 in DC, and they got destroyed 5-0 in the away game.
Anyway, over the life of MLS they're probably the team that's had the most success in international competition. That's not saying much, but it's true.

I don't include Superliga, that is just trash. I don't deny that DC has had the best international success, but damn 1 point in the CCL group.

http://www.hexagonalblog.com/2008/11/concacafs-top-ten-as-of-26nov2008.html#more has a list of top ten countries (which I posted above) and top ten clubs.
Here are how many final sixteen (I made "final sixteen" up, see definition below) appearances the UNCAF and CFU countries had the last five years (one Champions League and four Champions Cups):
Costa Rica: 10
Honduras: 10
Guatemala: 6
Trinidad and Tobago: 4
Jamaica: 4
El Salvador: 3
Panama: 2
Puerto Rico: 1
Suriname: 1
For the above, sixteen is double the number of teams in the Champions Cup. Therefore, I took the top two clubs in the CFU qualifying tournaments since they got one team in the Champions Cup and the top six teams in the UNCAF qualifying tournament since they got three teams in the Champions Cup. I defined the top six UNCAF teams as the four semifinalists and the two losing quaerterfinalists with the best goal differential in the quarterfinals. Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago had the top two in the 2007 CFU club tournament, which counts twice in this, once for the 2008 Champions Cup and once for the 2008-2009 Champions League. Wikipedia is my source.

Makes sense although I must say we did horrible this year. Of course, one bad year is not going to sink us incredibly low but I am hoping we get the opportunity to at least get 2.5 slots for next year. Saprissa, San Carlos, and possibly Liberia could make noise.
