A seven DVD set called History of Soccer: The Beautiful Game comes out October 7th (which is tomorrow). Does anyone know if it's any good?

I pre-ordered it a while back and should be getting it soon. I'll let you know how it is as soon as I see it.

This was on CBC last year in the lead up to the World Cup. Pretty good series.

I just ordered this for $59.99 including shipping from deepdiscountdvd.com if you are looking for a pretty good price.

Yeah, I pre-ordered it through deepdiscount.com last week. It is available starting tomorrow so with any luck, I will be receiving my dvd set soon.

Yeah, that's just what my marriage needs -- a multi-disc set on the history of soccer.

Mine was also from DeepDiscountDVD. I received an email last week that it already has shipped out. So it should be coming in soon. Can't wait.

Here is a mini review some wrote on another site

My set arrived today and it is well worth the money. The packaging is great, a black box that is semi-embossed with pictures (including Pele), 6 cases (a double case holds discs 6 & 7). Each case is clear,no inserts but the chapter lists and extras list are on the back of the cover art and shows through, very nice touch. On the back of the cases for discs 1, 4, and 7 it tells you to look out for the easter egg on that disc*. I haven't had too much time to look at all of it yet, but I played around with the first disc. The archival footage is great, quite amazing how good the footage from 1897 looks, though the 1898 footage looks like it has been through the washing machine. As for the shows themselves, they are anamorphic widescreen, 5.1 DD sound in English and a 2.0 track in Spanish, and look great. It has two subtitle tracks, track one has the english translations of other languages spoken, track two is the spanish translations. On entering the disc, you choose from English or Spanish, but this refers to the language of the menus, you have to manual change the audio track to track 2 if you would like Spanish audio.

Some observations:
The text in the extras is yellow, and makes it hard to read. Each early footage clip has a brief description, and it is hard to read (at least on my TV) but with a HDTV I'm sure it will be easier to read.

In a move that more discs should adopt, all menus and extras are also anamorphic widescreen, though there could be some debate as to whether or not the archival footage should be widescreen.

Even though the box, disc cases, and even the menus all say History of Soccer, they did not change the titles in the programs, they still say History of Football

This was a six-DVD set that was released in England and the rest of Europe called: The History of Football: The Beautiful Game. It came out at about the time of the World Cup.

I purchased it knowing that it wouldn't play on my DVD player, but with the intent of watching it on computer. The set is awesome. There is so much video, interviews and information. The music and Terence Stamp's commentary will make you want to put in the next disc as soon as you finish watching the one in your player.

This was produced by Fremantle Media for those that remember the old "World at War" series of WWII documentaries so you will get an idea of what to expect.

My favorite stuff was the European content although, I must admit, was really pleased with South American sections. I learned so much about football.

I, too, ordered the seven-disc set and am excited to see what appears on that 7th bonus disc that wasn't in the original set. It will be nice to see these discs on my TV and not my 19" computer monitor.

If you haven't ordered it yet, do so now. I got mine for $59.95 with free shipping. I paid $125 for the original so this release is a bargain.

Did you know you can put in a code in alot of DVD players to make them play PAL DVDs? I hope you tried this before you ordered the DVDs again.

I just got my DVDs and watched the first one. It is top notch stuff :) I especially liked the part about the CIA figuring out that the Soviets were in Cuba because they saw soccer fields from the surveillance planes. As we all know Cubans don't play soccer.

Here is a great review of this set. It is for the original set but totally applies to this set as I've not found any difference (so far) between this and the original. It is very long (I printed it out to hard copy and it was 19 pages), detailed and includes all of the easter eggs hidden on the set.

Check it out.

Enjoy!

Its pretty good, and if you don't want to pay the full price you can find it for free on various file sharing programs like kazaa and Winmx. I downloaded the entire set of DVDs off Winmx. Saved me the time of finding it at a store or the delivery time had I ordered it, and it was free to boot. Now I can use that money saved for another jersey.

Thereby robbing people of their livelihoods...

But I'm not here to debate file-sharing, or how unethical it is. I'm here to talk about the DVDs. Sounds like a great Christmas present idea.

How can you wait 'til Christmas? Why not ask Santa for a widescreen TV and DVD player to play it on? And maybe you can add in Dish Network to get FSW and GotTV. Thats what I'm doing. Santa's going broke on me. :)

You're right--it's going to be difficult to wait until Christmas for this. But I think I can manage.

But I've already got the home theater thing going. When I get the DVDs, I'll let you know what it looks like on my 72" widescreen projection system with surround sound.

Why don't you just steal the jersey, too?

Wow! I feel so inadequate. I'm only looking at a 56" widescreen. :)

I went to the previous link and tried to access the easter eggs, but couldn't. Does anyone know exactly what I need to do to see them?
