The TFC will propose to FIFA their idea of a playoff match against Oceania for the remaining World Cup spot that has been taken away from the Tournaments Champion that no longer automatically Qualify's.

Though I wanted a fourth sure spot for Concacaf, I believe this is fair.

I think this is fair as well. Also, it will be more fair to Australia as well.

True that Australia has a better chance of Qualifying going up against Jamaica or Honduras than they would against a South American team like Colombia or Chile..

This is unlikely to happen as it merely replicates what Oceania (and Australia in particular) have been complaining about all along: that they have to endure the relative lottery of a single two-leg game in order to qualify. Either giving Oceania a direct qualification spot (a bad idea, imo) or merging Oceania qualification with Asia in some fashion are more likely outcomes.

How about two half slots for Oceania? One playoff with Asia and one with South America or TFC. That way someone (NZ) other than the Aussies has a shot.

Or a mini preWorld Cup of the half-slots. Final 2 of 4 (or 3 of 6) goto the worldCup.

2002 would have seen something like this:

Ireland
Iran
Hondurus
Australia
Paraguay
New Zealand(???)

And it should be played in the Country hosting the WC ie. Germany

I really like this idea. I think FIFA should seriously consider doing this at least once. I think it would be a pretty good money maker as well.

When FIFA meets in December in Spain Blatter will push for the empty spot(champion) to be directly awarded to Oceania. He made the statement, during conference in Kuala Lampur(either Ofc or AFC) that he would push for it but that there would be many upset and opposed to it. As many have said I would love to see Oceania in playoff v CONCACAF/TFC and think it is areal possibility since Upchuck Blazer and Jackass Warner gave support to Blatter during recent controversy. Guess I should give the two some credit for lining up a possible extra slot for TFC. If somehow we get passed over without even a real consideration then Fu+k Fifa esp. Blatter before asia gets a fifth slot Comnebol and CAF should be given or even straight up to NZ/australia winner. Sick of asia this and that. Yes they did well but so did Mexico and the Us in 94 when there were only 24 teams, sure we got an extra spot but hell 8 new teams and only 6 feds. you do the math we did not get any special treatment after 94 and our stadiums were always full. Nuff venting just hope the idiots who run this give everyone a fair chance without being biased. Too many politics involved in FIFA just do what is fair and stop playing i'll rub your back after you s"#k my crank.

One more for those who don't think TFC 4th team would do well in WC play. Try Honduras against Iran or Aussies, Uruguay I think they would do well hell they kicked our ass in DC and would love to see any of those mention travel to San Pedro Sula.

Paraguay made the world cup. Colombia came in 5th in CONMEBOL WCQ.

I meant Uraguay. (You can make your own joke about "Not being able to tell gays apart" here.)

Uraguay and Austrailia each got a half-slot as did Iran and Ireland.

(For the 2002 world cup)

....or Paraguay, for that matter.

When the Socceroos and the Paraguayans played a three-match series in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne in 2000, with the Socceroos winning only the last game of that series after the teams drew the first two games, it turned out that Paraguay did not prepare them adequately for what turned out to be a playoff against Uruguay. But much of that can be blamed on the politics with Soccer Australia as much as with anything else-- not being able to get the desired players for preparations between that series and the World Cup playoffs, and so on and so forth.

But on paper, I would have to agree with VS. Teams like Jamaica and Honduras (or even Guatemala) would be on the depth chart below the South American teams he mentioned.

But we'll see if a playoff is really going to come about-- after all, the talk of the automatic place for Oceania is happening yet again...

CONCACAF, Oceania and AFC are all asking for an extra 0.5 spaces. This means that the confederations are asking for a total of:

UEFA: 13.5 plus Germany
CAF: 5.0
AFC: 5.0
CONMEBOL: 4.5
CONCACAF: 3.5
OFC: 1.0

That's a total of 33.5. I think we can all assume that FIFA isn't going to take any way from CAF, so the possible range is as follows:

UEFA: 13.0-13.5 + Germany
CAF: 5.0
AFC: 4.5-5.0
CONMEBOL: 4.0-4.5
CONCACAF: 3.0-3.5
OFC: 0.5-1.0

That means that two of the five non-CAF confederations will get what they want, and the others won't. Its my guess that AFC won't get the 5.0 they are looking for, because they wore out their politcal favors getting the 4.5 in the first place (through hosting and the old boycott threat). The UEFA-OFC block succeeded once in the past in securing Germany the 2006 host rights--they could easily side with Blatter and CAF is secure themselves the spoils along with a guaranteed Africa 2010 host.

So, I bet the spaces will be as follows:

UEFA: 13.5 + Germany
CAF: 5.0
AFC: 4.5
CONMEBOL: 4.0
CONCACAF: 3.0
OFC: 1.0

Anyway, that's my guess.

The concensus is that the OFC will get the spot. No CONCACAF country would be willing to spend money on basically a one-off match (The Aussies rarely lose at home).

Ask any Canadian from 94 or 96 on how such a playoff is taxing.

This is a joke right? First of all Oceania does NOT deserve an automatic slot being as it is there are all of two competitive teams there (it would be like the SPL given a free ticket in Champions League, they have to qualify for a reason). Politics of soccer will destroy it. The thought of both NZ and Australia given playoffs to get in is just as crazy, it would be like just giving them the ability to get in by performing well in one game because their qualifying group is such a joke....

Basically you dont hear Americans whining about spots for CONCACAF.

As far as i'm concerned we only need one. So the U.S.A will go.

Let all the other minnows worry & whine about more spots.

Since the U.S is the best, we would go every 4 years without question.
