In several post-match threads, a couple people mentioned a fight involving La Norte and the traveling Metro********heads, and then Barra/SE's coming over to help. There were also reports of Mathis spraying water on DC fans.

FYI, hard for it for you to perhaps realize, there is more than one side to this story. "Barra Brava guys came over to help". That was funny.

ESC and La Norte were peacefully and lyrically enjoying the soccer game, taking turns chanting back and forth at each other. It is 90 minutes of often hatefull speech, but it isn't violent. Today it became so, or close to being so, and I hold 3 of the 4 people I met in BB insecurity shirts, along with other non BB/SE fans partially responsible.

1st, The metro in the kilt was a scotsman over in NYC for the week who casually follows Metro and came on the trip. He was wearing the kilt because he's a scot from Scotland, not a random kid from America who has seen Austin Powers and trainspotting and just kept rewinding until he got good at the accent. If you want to pick on his cultural identity, go ahead. As a world traveller who has been to soccer games all over Europe and now the states, I have respect for him as a soccer fan.

2nd, A couple of guys (iirc 7 of the 60+ people) ran down to chant after the Metro goal, and that was wrong. Nothing good could have come from it, and I'd spent a large part of the second half pushing people into our section as a couple of word battles were getting out of hand, and getting worse as the second half wore on and a couple of DC fans including BB guys decided that rubbing the loss in our face was the way to go, and moved to the back of section 220 to rub at close range. A couple of Metro fans replied in kind, though one was brought into 120 by a BB fan (who was a good guy) on some sort of good will tour. The worst verbal offerings, oddly, were one from 2 guys who weren't even in La Norte (I think they were in section 123-4 or so) who kept standing up to tell us that they would like to stab us in the parking lot. Anyway, those idiots (again, not La Norte) aside, there was a bunch of pushing. I ran to the front to push the Metro fans back into the section, at which point I was hit in the head by a bag thrown from the La Norte side of the melee, but I didn't see who threw it so I won't say it was one of them. It didn't hurt, but it didn't help. We pushed everyone pack into the section, and spent the rest of the game, the pause before overtime, overtime and the 20+ minutes after OT ended with everyone in the section, under forced lockdown by me so that the incident would not repeat.

During this period, we were approached by a number of DC fans who threated to either get in fights with us, or meet us in the parking lot. So many, in fact, that security doubled and blocked off our section so that no one could get near it. Two cops from DC were there, and had a hand in pushing the DC fans back from the Metro section, not the other way around. After we got everyone back in the section, no one left until after the game was over.

During this time one tall skinny white dude with a pony tail threw a beer at us and was ejected, two larger gentlemen in Barra Brava t-shirts who tried to push up on our section clearly looking for trouble as they kept talking about beating us up in the parking lot, only to be shoved out of the way by cops at which point some metro fans decided to taunt their physical idiosyncracies (not polite but such is going to happen when you point fingers and threaten violence). During this time another white gentleman in a light blue Barra Brava shirt told us to meet him in the parking lot for a rumble, as did another guy in a grey polo shirt and a baldish guy in a DC United shirt who was being kicked out by cops.

Again, there were other things going on that I wasn't able to pay attention to (like overtime, sadly), but we received a number of threats of violence when we were cheering for our team without asking to beat up anyone. So much so that I pulled a cop aside and explained that he should get us an escort to the parking lot to make sure nothing broke out. I did see one guy in our section (not on the bus trip but down on his own) throw a plastic horn in response to the beer that was thrown at him, but I cannot explain the number of people that came to 320 today looking to get physical. It wasn't just one or two guys, it was closer to 10 or more, and I was just on one half of the section.

I would like to point out that when DC was up on Thursday, our club did not engage in reciprocal behavior, did not cross the stadium to taunt or threaten violence close range, nor did I even comment to the 3 DC fans I saw walking out alone when 11 Metro guys walked past them in the parking lot outside gate D after the painful DC win. We could have started something, but that isn't our style. I met a number of DC fans who- I am assuming filled with Budweiser Barley Bravado- expressed in interest to take the club rivalry to a violent level, something neither club needs. Some where members of supporter's clubs, others not, but all were DC fans trying to get a "row" going for no good reason. This isn't Millwall. If you want to explain it away that it was all a reaction to the ESC rush after the goal, please explain why this had been going on for the last 20 minutes of the game while DC was winning. Again, the guys who ran down were wrong and I let them know that, but it wasn't a one sided fight, and there were no problems (other than unfortunate chanting) when it was just ESC and La Norte.

I am sure there are a number of DC fans who aren't this way (I didn't see one person I could identify as a SE), and I was able to talk to K and partially to DaveBrother on a human level about normal soccer issues without incident. Some other DC fans, however, were not so well intentioned.

I will freely admit that a couple of the ESC fans either acted or re-acted poorly, but we spent 98+ minutes in our section chanting with La Norte.

I am not impugning the reputation the Barra Brava, or to assume that the action of 3 guys is indiciative of the whole club, or that the 8-9 other DC fans represent the entire fan base.

But the sections got more dangerous places to be once guys (both BB and not BB) got into 120 and decided to take the rivalry a bit further.

You may not like those facts, but I am not inventing any of these events.

Mathis squirted his water bottle at Stan Lee, DC's director of operations (I think that's the right name and title) because Clint wanted to take the easy way out and go through the tunnel leading to the DC locker room instead of facing the fans.

Real classy behavior on his part. It only made the walk and fans' reaction, worse. If you can't take the heat, don't draw the red.

Mathis jawed with a few fans on the way out after his ejection. He got to the tunnel, listened to the insults hurled at him ("Three titles baby", "you choking dog", "#@%&*!" and "you &^%*$ suck"- you get the idea) and gave everyone the thumbs up before he sprayed the water bottle. I was sitting in section 119 near that exit. He even gave someone a high five at halftime when everyone was heckling the Metros.

As for the fight that took place after the goal, all I remember seeing was a bunch of yellow shirted dudes from CSC running up to where the commotion was. I saw what was happening and went over to midfield seats to watch the OT. I'm 41 years old and my days of duking it out over a sports result are long past....

There was some pretty pathetic behavior from some fans of both teams on Sunday. I am glad to Not hear a report of anyone being hurt...let's hope it stays that way.

I too, like Bill, have long since passed my days of duking it out over the result of a silly game (especially ties). My only encounter with Metro fans was the four or five maroons who yelled incomprehensible gibberish at me as I casually walked by them on the concourse at halftime. I didn't understand a word they said and just thought them to be inebriated...so kept drinking my foggy bottom. But it did seem odd to just be walking along talking to friends and drinking beer to then "bum rushed" by people I've never met and will never likely know. Surreal moment of human idiocy would be one way to describe it. I thought to myself at the time that if that behavior kept up, that'd definitely be an invitation to rumble with the wrong people.

Cheers,
Tim

Actually, he took the "abuse" with good humor. He was laughing. He was pretty cool. There was another guy who had also come down during that point who didn't take it in as good a humor but he didn't do anything other than frown and grumble.

2nd, A couple of guys (iirc 7 of the 60+ people) ran down to chant after the Metro goal, and that was wrong. Glad you weren't hurt. I didn't see who threw it, but I've got a good idea. Honestly, CSC did a good job getting in between us. I was hoping no one would cross the guardrail, but then some lemonade flew (hit me in the chest) and someone else threw a beer from behind me and it was almost on.

Again, the guys who ran down were wrong and I let them know that, but it wasn't a one sided fight, and there were no problems (other than unfortunate chanting) when it was just ESC and La Norte.

The chanting wasn't that bad, and it certainly wasn't going to lead us to handbags until some members of the ESC rushed down. I don't know who the DC fans that were up in your area. I didn't see any of them, but I was watching the game more than anything else.

I'm pretty much on the same page with you, jamison. This was pretty stupid all around.

As for Mathis, I didn't see what happened. I was just heckling him to heckle him. However, it would seem that we should do everything NOT to draw a red card on the Metroscum, as we can't seem to beat them that way. (Sorry for the on-topic discussion)

I'm glad no one got hurt. I hope this incident doesn't repeat itself. I had a good time going back and forth with the ESC and between the goal and going to handbags, it ruined the game for me.

Glad to hear that no actual fight broke out . . . I rather enjoyed the intensity between the few ESC guys who rushed up to the brink of 120 and the brim of of La Norte. IT just showed passion. I'd feel differently if there had been an actual fight.

Clint is a scared little bitch. His efforts to avoid the walk of shame were pathetic. He will never play in Europe.

In thinking about the timeline, I've realized that the things went from chanting to ugly after the Mathis red (seems obvious now, but I'd been up for like 38 of 41 hours when I posted the above).

I think the DC fans took Mathis's shot as a Leonardo (vs. Tab, '94) type incident. It certainly was stupid. Anyway, Mathis got a card, Convey groggily (that a word?) got to his feet and the DC fans (some anyway) got upset about it and tried to take it out on us.

Luckily, I think Mathis only has 2 MLS games and the playoffs left with Metro. It is time for him to take his act to Europe, or Mexico (where this behavior is more tolerated). I've personally grown tired of it, and yesterday it put us in danger. I will draft him a letter as a fan, advising him of that fact, asking him to remember to play soccer first and be a redneck second. Not that it will do any good though.

You can't seriously think that any European club would want this washed-out wanker can you? And I hardly doubt any Mexican clubs would want a gringo who can't score. Clint's personality for me was defined by his plan to celebrate his second goal in Japorea with a Roy Jones Jr. style puncharound. Predictably, that second goal never happend. Only a douchebag thinks about goal celebrations.

After the game I saw one guy wearing a DCU shirt with his nose busted up pretty good. He and the two girls with him were wearing the crime scene tape that I think BB was wearing. I assumed that came from the melee? Are we sure no one was hurt?

DC's director of operations is Dennis Lee, Stan Lee is the creator of Spiderman (although what Dennis does in his off hrs I couldn't tell you!)

So was it Dennis or Stephen who got wet? (either way that's REALLY sad on Clint's part).

Sorry to hear things got out of hand on Sat, I didn't see anything as I was watching the game. Hopefully people will keep their heads on Wed.

One of those ESCum punks grabbed Ian by the hair. I was about mid-flight with a clenched fist when some CSC geek got in my way. I was ready to kick that Jersey ********er's head in. ESC started the whole near-brawl by coming down to us in the first place after that horrid piece of cheating to tie the game.

I was in 218 - basically between the ESC and la Norte. I'll tell you exactly what I saw and heard.

Not much.

ESC, in general: Not a bad show, on the main. Strong in the first half, but waned after that. Until the rush, which was bad news (see below).

The dude in kilt: A little threatening-looking at first, but when you saw his demeanor, you could tell he was on a diplomatic mission. The combat boots didn't help, but when you saw the guy walking up with a brew in his left hand and an empty "shake my hand" hand in the other (and the look on his face), you could tell he wasn't out to rouse any rabbles.

The rush after the goal: Bad news. Youze ESC guys could have made the same point by just standing back in your section and making those "Hahh-haa" sounds like the taunting kid on "The Simpsons."

Stadium security: Wow, with all the whining about the CSC folk on these boards, these guys did a great job during the moments following the tying goal. They really exercised restraint while they were exercising restraint. Sounds like, according to jaimson, they could have posted an extra person or two in front of the ESC-ers. Might have prevented the personal threats, which might have prevented the rush. Which was bad news (see above).

Clint: Man, the guy must have taken lessons from Jack Tatum. A real forearm shiver to the skull. I saw Hristo (I suppose) shake hands on his (delayed) way off the field, but it took him so long to make his way to the tunnel, I was watching the GAME by then, instead of Clint. I did give him a rousing BOO on his way in, but wasn't close enough to see, much less feel, any alleged squirt-bottle action.

La Norte: You guys are good. It's interesting that the seat-police let those three 12-year-old Norte-wanna-bees into the section (two had on Real Madrid jerseys), but probably wouldn't have let me down there. Those kids thought they were the deal, but were little, uh, wanna-bees. I just wish I had gotten ahold of Sachin to get a real ticket to get down there with youze guys.

Overall: What a great afternoon. And what a ref who can't tell time - but that's another story.

-G. Rex

PS- jamison - Good to hear you got to meet K and DaveBrother. Good eggs, them.
