If Argentina had at least that bronze :o ...
But...women!
Nah! They don't 'count' ...

Not quite sure about your math, as far as I know we won gold 4 years ago and a silver in 1996, in my books we are still ahead thanksI have to concede that your records in subs: sub-13s, sub-15s, sub-17s, sub-21s, sub-23s, Olympics - in all those juvenile tournaments of the past - ARE superior to ours.
Not in our on-topic 2008 Olympics though...
Yet: you still have a chance ;) ...
But for that you NEED to beat Nigeria.
That 'silver' won't be enough, since our modest bronze will give us the edge.
However, if you want a real fight - there we go! ...
In Man's football (with a capital 'M' - since only that counts to you) the score is 5 WCs to us x 2 WCs for you, 26 Copa Américas for us x 25 Copa Américas (including the 2 last)...
And our best player scored 'only' 1000 goals more than your 'best'.
lol lol lol lol lol
Eternal underdogs :D ...

Very mature, Im impressed resorting to your tired old tricks I see:rolleyes:.
As for your other comments, do I really need to beat a dead horse?? I allready explained my take on womens futbol, yes this is a 2008 Olympics thread based on a futbol topic , so no the other Olympic events do not enter into the conversation at hand.
5 WC's, yup , once again stay on topic, or I could ask whom has won more South American titles?, see not relevant to the title of the thread.
By the way even my mother will not watch womens soccer;).
Little question I would like to leave you with if I may be so bold, why is it that you seem to get into a lot of niggly conversations like ours right now, is it everyone else or could it be you?

Actualy I have one more question, I can only think you must mean Pele as "the player whom score 1000 more goals", correct?
How many did he score in Europe, the Italian league, Champions league and so on??
Did you mean Di Stefano for us??
Underdogs,,,,,,please would you not be shocked if a country of your population size in comparison to ours with a similar love of the sport would not have more titles?? It only makes statistical sense, among other social , political and ecomical factors that shaped the facts.

Very mature, Im impressed resorting to your tired old tricks I see.Tricks?...
I'm very serious, man..
You're underestimating more than half the human gender  ...As for your other comments, do I really need to beat a dead horse??Were we (Brzs) a dead horse - as I don't think you (Args) are - we wouldn't be arguing for 3 pages now...I allready explained my take on womens futbolMan,
Concede it: your 'take' is wrong - and discriminatory.
We are in the XXIth century, mate...
Women do exist - believe it or not.yes this is a 2008 Olympics thread based on a futbol topic, so no the other Olympic events do not enter into the conversation at hand. You yourself said it: the topic is the 2008 Olympics.
In spite of that I accepted your 'other Olympics' records...
Since we are, however, introducing those extra off-topic data, why not the WCs? Why not the Copa Américas?...5 WC's, yup , once again stay on topicThat's off-topic - I concede.
But if you can be off-topic, why not me?...or I could ask whom has won more South American titles?Brazil of course: 26 x 25 Copa Américas.
Or you're referring to Libertadores?...
But then that's even more off-topic, since we'll be dealing with clubs and not NTs.
Ok, then let's talk beach football, futsal, footvolley...
I'll go for that: for me it's all soccer...see, not relevant to the title of the thread.Agreed.By the way even my mother will not watch womens soccer.Won't let her: you'll change the channel! :p ...Little question I would like to leave you with if I may be so bold, why is it that you seem to get into a lot of niggly conversations like ours right now, is it everyone else or could it be you?I work with tourism (have an agency in Rio) and - besides loving to discuss football - it makes me constantly need to update my incipient English.
In BS I join the 'útil ao fútil' - the 'useful' to the 'futile' (what many times - like now - proves to be quite entertaining).
BTW (lazy to go to the Webster): what the hell is niggly?...
Anything to do with 'neglectabe', 'despicable', 'trifle'?...
Enlighten me, please :) ...

Grán adivino!...How many did he score in EuropeHundreds.
A few examples:
http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=OuA3rWKjq64&feature=relatedthe Italian leagueWhen he played the Italian League (compared to the Brazilian one) was simply insignificant in world football.Champions leagueMan,
Are you Argie or European?...
You are not acquainted with the football history of your own country?...
You should know that at Pelé's time South America leagues (esp. the Brz) were way superior to European ones.
We used to thrash the CL champs even more than today.Did you mean Di StefanoThat one I respect - a real genius.
The only problem is that his Real Madrid, just because won 1 friendly against Pelé's Santos in 1962, spent the whole decade avoiding to pay them back a visit.
They knew what would happen :D ...Underdogs,,,,,,please would you not be shocked if a country of your population size in comparison to ours with a similar love of the sport would not have more titles?? It only makes statistical sense, among other social , political and ecomical factors that shaped the facts. If your argument held, Brazil (back to our topic, at last  ...) would be at least 5th in the 2008 Olympics - since we are the 5th biggest and 8th most populated nation on Earth...
Right now we are only 28th in the table of medals - even Zimbabwe and Jamaica are ahead of us...
Think of something else, will you?...

Pelé scored 1300 in 1500.
No comparison, man.

Sorry, sorry maybe you meant Freidenreich?? Yeah he scored a heck of a lot of goals I will concede that.;)Another genius, the father of them all.
But Friendereich played in the 20s - and his records cannot be factually proved.
And, discreetely, step by step (Di Stéfano, Puskas, Friendereich...) El Viejo Matias gradually gets farther and farther from our topic, huh, you 'smartso'?...
At any moment his time machine will get us to the ORIGINAL Olympic Games.
Well, we'll at least be on topic.
The Administration - it's true - forgot to specify if the title '2008 Olympics' written on top of this page refers to '2008 A.D' or 2008 before Christ  ...

This thread is a great success, and I applaud the author for his accomplishment. Truly a masterpiece.Thanx bud!..
But...
JUST TO CLARIFY:
This thread in no way was created to 'give excuses', to 'ridicule' or to 'explain' the recent Brazilian defeat.
The 3 x 0 were more than deserved.
Argentina played better, period.
The joy of the Argentinians is perfectly justified after so many setbacks to Brazil.
After the 1st moment of enthusiasm though, if somebody tries as I did to put things in perspective, that should be perfectly understood.
First:
We are dealing with an Olympics, where many important players cannot play.
Even the under-23 ones go to the competition under pressure (even threats) of the clubs that pay their wages - what for sure will compromise their performances.
If they by chance get injured those clubs will blame them for disobedience.
Second: the main teams (precisely because of that pressure) don't have enough time to train them, what makes even more difficult an evaluation.
Third: an Olympics does involve men's and women's sides in most of the sports.
And it's absolutely justifiable that the medals won by men & by women in a determinate sport be taken in consideration when judging the performance of their countries in such or such sport...
So, although expressed in a playful and polemic way, the theme of this thread is undoubtefully serious.
I don't care, Caturro, if this thread is a 'success', 'accomplishment', a 'masterpiece' or not.
All I know is that ANY thread that goes beyond the 3rd page has something worthwhile in it ;) ...

Just a question(not meant to be offensive or anything), when was the last time that anyone scored 3 goals on Brazil? Was it us on the previous WCQ? If that's so then who did it do such before that?
Yeah, we beat them 3-1 in Buenos Aires in the last qualifiers. I'm thinking maybe this time we should go for at least four.

Difficult but well deserved win.
Two penalties not observed for Argentina.
Nigeria however almost equaled.
Messi's pass made the difference.

Gee finally a congrats, listen Kingkong I have in another thread answered many of these topics, ie your rose colored view of futbol in eras gone by, the tactical differences in futbol today, nutrition, pitch quality and so on, and how I think futbol today is in general of a higher calibre than yesteryear. So in Pele and his contemporaries time and the ones before albeit true craftsmen of their art I highly doubt they are any better than Diego or perhaps the likes of Platini or shudder to think the future...... The tactics, were just so different I figure you could see that when you have a four man frontline and a scant defencive strategy more goals will occur, hardly the same era as Maradona's. My argument if you would have read it closely before your mind started jumping for a response about population was one made about futbol loving nations, seriously Brasil and Argentina are MAD about it, I can' t see India or China in that capacity can you??
As far as underestimating the other "gender" get real would you, I DON"T HAVE TO BE A FAN OF WOMEN"S SOCCER, it would be like watching a CFL game when a NFL game is on, like watching MLS when LA LIGA is on, it is not even close to the calibre of the mens game and I don't see why this opinion of mine makes me in your eyes anti-womyn, ( notice the "y" in the spelling is that politicaly correct enough for you )?
Futility, yes with this I agree, because I still see you as pompous and full of yourself and as a 61 year old I would figure enough life experience would have taught you to be humble and move on.

And it's absolutely justifiable that the medals won by men & by women in a determinate sport be taken in consideration when judging the performance of their countries in such or such sport.
I want to examine this opinion of yours a bit further. First I must say I disagree, not because it is a men versus women issue but because the statement in upon itself is not correct. Canada a nation whom before the first world war was a country that was making strides in soccer but because of the wars has become isolated in the sport and has taken upon its own "sports", therefore the man's soccer teams have been far below par. Not so with the womens game, Canada has feilded on a fairly consistent basis a strong team, ( the game here is much played and enjoyed by many but not often carried through to an older age or serious pro level, college or university levels yes and it is the womens side that is often a beneficiary from this fact ). Now lets us juxtapose this with Iran, a country whose mens side has arguably enjoyed some success, but the womens game far from it for obvious reasons, maybe with more globalisation and western idealogy it could change.Argentina a nation of machismo to be sure has just come to grips with the iea of certain womens sport, making some sports "young" to the womens participation in them.Im sure Argentina is not alone in this fact.
Ergo I think the blanket statement you made above does not work, for to judge a countries progress in a sport like Canada with womens soccer is so in contrast with the mens game. Not to mention countries that frown upon womens involvement period.
Ah yes the word "niggly", you may benefit from a "slang" dicitionary, they do exist and are quite usefull since the English language is a language of contast change and adaptation. I think your over usage of the dictionary may be a downfall as the english language in itself is in danger. Slang, text messaging, hip-hop culture and local as well as regional adaptations and foreign influence are constantly morphing it.
So in conclusion, I am not sexist like I stated before I just love the sport and prefer to watch it played at a higher calibre, the womens game is not there yet.Having said this Im sure our Canadian girls could give our Canadian guys a ride for their money.
