Amusing thing about JT (For me anyway) is that he reminds me of Steve Yzerman, a former ice hockey player who spent his entire NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings. He became captain for them (at 21) and was the captain for the rest of his career. Loved by all of Detroit and a legend and hero for us. He loves the Wings as Terry loves Chelsea. Forgot to add that when Yzerman had his number retired, the letter C was put right above his name on his banner.

Vermont Red made an EXCELLENT point:

"I just think its odd to choose a player as captain who is not an unquestioned starter."

Yeah, that's why JT got it over Rio :P :D

Obvious innit.

I mean, it's always a wonder if Terry will start for England....

A few more head in the clouds moments for Rio could see his arse on the bench though.I doubt Capello will put up with his slack concentration allowing opponents in on goal.

Can someone explain to me why some people seem to think that who the captain is may have such big implications on who is going to win the game? I am in the USA , so maybe I don't really 'get it', but don't flame me.

I know what being a captain means for a sports team because I have been one. It's about being a leader, but as I have read some articles about JT being captain (my vote of course) , people are making comments about how the team would play better with Rio or another guy wearing the band. I just can't see how which CB wearing the band might make Rooney or some other fwd make or miss a shot.

Other than leading the team, setting examples, and communicating with the ref...isn't the captain thing being blown out of proportion just a bit?

I just have read so much saying oh JT is a horrible choice, the team would be better if x guy was captain. To me it still comes down to 11 guys playing together and not who is wearing the band.

Strangely enough I must admit to being a bit torn about JT getting the nod for England captain. I'm pleased for him, obviously, but there's a couple of points that made me wonder if it was such a good decision.

1. From our point of view, he will tend to get the blame, (like super-frank), when England play poorly, even if it's got nothing to do with his performance. If you remember people were still wittering on about Frank screwing up England's chances in the qualifiers even though England played shite when he didn't play.

2. From an England supporters viewpoint, maybe a break from the old, failed regime, might have been a better idea. I know we've got rid of one of the problems in McSven who was totally clueless but a new Captain would have re-emphasised the 'new broom' and maybe altered the mindset which is, (let's be honest), the basic problem.

Having said all that from a purely football point of view he's simply a better defender than Rio who's too often caught out of position and has to use his speed to try and recover the position. He gets away with it most of the time but against better opposition he's sometimes found wanting. JT's not as quick but his anticipation is on another level to Rio's and... well, almost everybody else, tbh.

Also, there's the certain intangible matter of 'leadership' that keeps cropping up. Personally I think Rio's not as far behind as some of you may think, (us old Peckham boys have to stick together, y'know :)), but I don't think he's as inspirational as JT is to the fellas around him. Rio's a great player but there's more to it than that. I think most of the fellas realise that JT would lay down in traffic to stop the ball crossing the line and that's simply not the case with guy's like Rio Ferdinand who's more... well, professional, I suppose you could say... although it seems strange to use it as a negative.

Are you kidding me? You know what it means to be a Captain of the Premier League Champions or England? Slag off.

They're trolling, from here on out ignore them. They're just bitter and you know what? I'm going to bask in it. Just be glad that Teso (Who blamed the children for the Beslan massacre by the way) isn't here. He's so incredibly biased that it's not even funny.

Well done to JT. Hopefully he can help England qualify for WC2010. He has the armband and as an England fan I will support him. Maybe the Press can now concentrate on the more important issues - such as the results! ;)

Capello made the correct choice in selecting John Terry as captain. Ferdinand, in my opinion, doesn't exhibit leadership qualities. He is unable to boost players' morale. On the contrary he just barks and screams instead of encouraging them. That's not what one expects from a leader. Even Gary Neville is an improvement on Ferdinand. As for Gerrard any evidence of leadership qualities is conspicious by its absence. The lad is not capaple of leading a troop of boy scouts through a small forest. This idea of some people blaming John Terry for McClaren's failings with the national team is utter nonsense.

As I have previously stated managers such as Mourinho, Capello and Scolari are acutely aware of why John Terry should captain the national squad!
