Vanuatu leaps 15 places from 170 to 155 in August 2002 FIFA ranking.

Okay, Vanuatu belongs ahead of Nepal, Laos, and Belize. But ahead of a respected European side like San Marino (161)? Someone at FIFA has been doing too much Coke.

San MArino is not a good team whether European or not.

10-3-1993 San Marino 0-0 Turkey

I suppose you're going to tell us that Turkey isn't a good team either.

Oh my god-- you are so wrong. The Turkey of that era beat Norway, Poland, Denmark and Bulgaria (which was good back then, you know), so San Marino's point against them really counts as proof of their quality.

Look, guys, I know San Marino might not be the most fancied of sides, but they DO play in UEFA-- the best confederation of all. Just think of the competition they have to face! And when you look at it that way and also when you take into account the 1-1 result they ground out against Latvia, you really have to put them over Vanatu.
You guys must just really hate Europe alot because you Americans never travel and can't speak any language other than English! I bet you call your championship the "World Series of MLS" too...

Lets put San Marino in ''the world best confederation''in South America, they wouldn't have a chance ''and'' why not put them on the AFC?
No they wouldn't have a chance either, but San Marino are doing good against Turkey,Lichtenstein,Latvia etc so San Marino must be very good!
After all they got a draw against Turkey in 1993.

I'm an American? Oh my! I'm going to have to ask my parents, if in fact they are my parents, about this.

I bet only Brazil could beat San Marino consistently. I mean, how many of those crap South American teams finished higher in the World Cup than the team that San Marino tied (ie Turkey)? That's right-- only Brazil. Up to five qualify out of COMEBOLAS confederation, right? Well, San Marino would probably be second then, no?

What a preposterous assertion! At least as far back as 1985, San Marino has NOT played Lichtenstein! Those results come against GOOD European teams like Latvia. Because Latvia is in Europe, it could probably beat most teams from other confederations.

Where is everyone here?
Don't you know that there are other places than Europe that play better football than let's say...England?
And i think Venezuela could beat San Marino with 5-0 at least.
Turkey only played against Brazil in the WOrld CUps and lost twice of them, and didn't Ecuador beat in a pre world cup friendly against Turkey?
More impressive than San Marino tying in 19freaky93!

I haven't seen Latvia play so I'll reserve any judgment, but I do have a problem with the assertion that simply because a team is in Europe, it could beat most teams in other confederations.

Take Slovenia for example. Though their Euro 2000 campaign couldn't be considered stellar, they were respectable. Fast forward to this summer when Slovenia got absolutely clobbered by Honduras' B-side.

So let's get this straight - a UEFA qualifier at full strength losing 5-0 to the reserves of a team that couldn't qualify out of Concacaf? Times have changed - membership to UEFA no longer guarantees superiority to teams from other regions.

Actually San Marino had a big say in England's non-qualification of World Cup 1994. We had to beat them by 7 clear goals to have a chance of going through. What happens? They only score a goal against us after 50 seconds. Everyone in the pub turned a whiter shade of pale! We ended up winning 7-1 which, had other results gone our way would have prevented us from qualifying on that result alone.

Surely Greenland could take Vanutu. But would Greenland be considered Uefa or Concacaf? Interesting :)

I would be more inclined to say England had a big say in England's non-qualification for the 1994 WC. If you are ever in a position to where you have to beat anyone by seven goals to advance, then your play as a whole is responsible for not qualifying, not a single goal from San Marino.

Not really. Groups often come down to goal difference. There's no shame in that. We were awful against Holland which is where the famous quote "Do I not like Orange" came from. If Graham Taylor had managed Brasil they wouldn't have qualified either.
