So how often do you guys get together at Mother Egan's? Do you only get together there for Aztex business, or do you meet up for just a social get together too? I'm out in the burbs near Lake Travis, but would like to pop down and join in now and again if that's ok. How many of you are there that meet there?
I've never been to Mother Egan's, but I hear it's the place to watch footy here in Austin. Does it have parking? If not, where do you guys park?

I usually go when there's a game that I want to watch. Which may not be as often as other folks. I'll definitely be there Wednesday night for the US qualifier, and nearly all US games. And I'm going to be there for the Stoke home opener Saturday afternoon. But, like many other folks (I'm sure) there's other things in my life (wife!:)), so I'm not down there every night, or every Friday night, or anything like that.
As far as I know, there isn't any official parking. I've had a lot of success finding a spot within three blocks along or just off West Ave., north of 6th. Fortunately, most games are at non-peak times downtown, so the parking has never been much of an issue. Except for that one asshole monster pickup truck that decided that he could park in an illegal spot and I was a small car and could get out with only 6 inches between him and me (he was right, but he's still an ass). Metered spaces require pay only until 5:30 on weekdays, so they're fair game any time I've gone. Except for that first playoff game in Florida.
Mother Egan's has become our home. Many would say that Fado's is more of a footy pub here in Austin... but it's more expensive. They have all the Setanta games, but Setanta has forced them to charge a ridiculous amount to air them. So I never go. I'm not that desperate to watch those games.
We've had more than 20 people at some of the gatherings. There were probably a dozen for the PDL final.
Probably the best place to find out when we're getting together is the Chantico's Army website (http://www.chanticosarmy.com/).

I'm down at Mother Egan's about once a week, and they've been good about making us feel welcome. Their prices are fair, they've got pretty decent pub grub (mmm, deep fried Snickers), and they have a number of TV's. Grant is one of the managers we've dealt with, but I think our favorite staffer their is Johnny, who is the Irish bartender that has been there on occassion when we've had events. Invariably when we go to watch a match, we sit in the back section, and bring other folks in who are curious what the noise is about.
Historically, it depends on what's going on. For the El Paso away match (the last of the season) we had about a dozen folks. Pretty much the same for the Bradenton semifinal match. For the Laredo Southern Conference final, I think we had about 30. For the PDL Championship match, it was about 10. Naturally, we typically get more folks on the weekend than on "schoolnights"
From the TV's, they don't have Setanta, although I'm going to talk to Will who is one of the owners about getting that. This is important as there are as many Stoke City matches on Setanta (maybe more) than Fox Soccer Channel. Until Mother Egan's gets Setanta, we have several options including The Tavern up by House Park, Plucker's, and/or Fado that I'll select (with input from others) for those matches.
Parking at Mother Egan's is a bit tough. They've got about 4 spots behind the pub off the alley, but the best option is on the street around the 6th and Rio Grande area. You've also got some paid parking lot areas that usually run $5.
Definitely keep an eye on Chantico's Army. There is a Calendar of Events that is maintained for events like this, and if there's something you'd like put up there, just email info@chanticosarmy.com. We'll post it.

FYI - if you park across the street before 5:30 pm, you have a good chance of getting towed. It happened to my wife, she parked in front of Opal Devines (I think) well before the valet service kicked in, and didn't notice any of the signs that were barely visible. When she went to leave, her car was gone, and after arguing with a couple valet parking guys about what kind of BS that was, we had no choice but to cough up the $170.00 to get the car out of impound. Ruined what was otherwise a great night. This may be common knowledge to you cosmopolitan types, so if you already knew this, sorry. GRRRRRRRR.

So, I have a quick question (no, not another poll). Until Mother Egan's gets Setanta on their TV's, we have several options for watching Stoke City matches. Below are some of the pubs that have Setanta, and which we could watch the Stoke matches on (for instance, we could've watched tape delay this past weekend, the August 30th match will be on Setanta)...
The Tavern (12th & Lamar)
Right next to House Park, with some parking. I've been there, but it's been over 6 years. Back then, they had great TV's.
Plucker's (various locations; South, North, RR, UT Area)
I've been here a lot. Great food, cold beer.
Fado (4th and Lavaca)
Familiar to many folks. Expensive beer.
Nasty's
I've never been here, so I have no info
BD Riley's (6th Street)
This is kind of like Fado in that it's a corporate pub. It's on 6th Street across from the Driskill. Parking will be a bear.

Nasty's has Setanta? Wow. Man, I can't believe that place still exists. I only went in there once when I was in college -- sometime between '80 and '85. I suppose I should poke my head in there again out of curiosity.
There is even less parking there than anywhere downtown. It's tucked away on a street off Guadalupe near Amy's Ice Cream.
I have some good soccer memories of the Tavern. Ones that go back '94. Unfortunately, they've completely failed to come through.

Had to go do some work. Here's the rest of my thoughts:
I have an issue with Fado's. But I have a thing about Eurosnobs. They do have good food.
Only poked my head in the Plucker's by campus. Didn't like it very much.
BD Riley's. Decent Irish sessions. Don't really like the set-up for watching anything, though I did watch a US game there once in the back.
As far as parking goes, the Tavern and one of the non-campus Pluckers would be the best options. It might be nice to start working the Tavern in the hopes that the Aztex will be at House next season.
But, with all my comments, you should only count me as, at most, a half-vote. And that half-vote would be split between the Tavern and Pluckers (as long as it's not Round Rock or Lakeline).

I really enjoy Mother Egan's for social things, too. Good Pub for the St. Patty's Day, also. I won't be able to really go there much, though. I try to play the beautiful game (as long as no one is watchin us middle aged hacks playing!) on Wednesdays and my daughter has practice on Tuesday and Thursday. If I can, I would definitely like to watch Stoke play on the weekends, but that will probably only be when its on Fox Soccer.
Following more of this thread, I would prefer the Tavern over one of the chains. Pluckers can be OK, but its just a different atmosphere. I haven't had the same problem with the EuroSnobs at Fado, but I can see where others might have.

Just a note to everyone, that I've posted a new Calendar item at Chantico's Army about the Middlesborough match on August 30. I've gone ahead and set it at The Tavern, as I think the general feeling will reflect Violet, MadMartigen, and my opinion. If it blows, then we have several other alternatives.

Not to sound treasones toward johhny and the wonderfull people, who have welcomed us with such open Irish pub worker hands, "IF" we were to play at House next season, and "IF" Mother Es was somehow unable ta get setanta, wouldn't it make more sense for us ta switch our home pub to The Tavern??
Notice all the IFs

A lot of IFs, but frankly, warranted. Between us "girls", Mother Egan's has some staff who are not being very helpful when asked for information.

Just between us 'girls', last time I tried to watch a US soccer game at the Tavern, they didn't have the Fox Soccer Channel. So we may be forced, due to circumstances beyond our control, to two-time.

Hmmm, a threesome...
I'm actually okay with having two different pubs depending on what we need to watch. As a note, I still have to approach Mother Egan's about getting Setanta which should be fairly inexpensive (we want the Sports, not the Premier, channel).

Then I guess, depending upon how long it takes for Mother Es ta get Setanta if they get it at all, we continue to threesome as the nead arises. ;)
Sounds good ta me :D

Hey Aztex fans, we here at Cuatro's would like to extend an invitation to try us out! We carry Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta, so you should be able to see any game you'd like. We are located at 24th and San Gabriel, and have a 40 spot parking lot. There are dozens of big screens, and we are happy to change to a game at your request. We open early on weekends for the EPL games, and we've had a lot of great feedback from the local Chelsea and Arsenal clubs. We'd love to see you all!
Feel free to email or call if you have any questions.

We're going to see you on Saturday for the Stoke City v. Middlesbrough game (unfortunately I won't, as I'm going to be out of town, but watching, in Albuquerque). We appreciate Cuatro's for setting us up, especially since most folks that day are focusing on the other football. I'm looking forward to checking out Cuatro's myself, and may even try to get by on September 8th for the 1st Air of the Scotland v. Macedonia WCQ.
Let's go you POTTERS!!! C'mon you Tartan Army!!!

Lads, I know this is gonna make me sound like some fickle little player but, as far as I go, I think we should dump Es.
#1 Cuatros is acctually "Inviting US"
#2 The vibe I'm getting from the e-mail, and their willingness ta switch games makes methink that they are not Euro snobs behind the bar, unlike some no offense johnny ;).
#3 I'm going out on a limb with this one but I'll bet they don't have a "Mad" Irishman behind the bar, again no offense Johhny.
#4 and again I'm going out on a limb with this one but I'll bet they have cheeper pints and grub. :D
#5 they all ready have resident footie clubs soo they've obviously been doing this for awhile.
#6 They HAVE FSC AND SETANTA!!!
#7 they seem, to me, like a football island in an other wise throwball sea, as far as location goes.
#8 better parking then Es
#9 I think their slightly closer ta House soo should that be our home field. hmmmm.
#10 It's very close to the Rio Grande ACC, and UT, Campuses soo I'll bet we can use it as a soap box to campaign the Aztex to the local college footie population.
Need I say more
I vote, without a doubt, that we change this thread ta Cuatros and, for lack of better words, dump Mother Es.
But I'm just Alejo Loco, what tha rest of yeu lads think?

I say an invite goes a long way. The fact, that they went to the trouble to register here and make an invite makes me want to give them a go at the very least. I say we owe them that much.

I don't know if we have to "dump" them. In cases where the Chelski Footie Club are there, we will probably get bumped. That being said, I would like to give them all of our Setanta business and see how it goes. Mother E's has been very accommodating, too. Lets give it a couple of goes before we make any rash statements.

I agree with you Roma. I have actually heard a lot of good buzz on Cuatros for a lot of different events, so lets see how they are. With mgrey out this weekend, too y'all need to go in force and show that the Chantico's army is serious about our Football Club, too. I wish I could make it, I have my fingers crossed on Stoke's chances this year, and I think this is a big game for them.
