This is the courtesy thread to announce post-draft, pre-season transfers for the Small Rocks 2008-09 League. Official transfer posts are still to be made in the League Forum at fantasy.premierleague.com.

The much heralded rush for Shorey failed to materialize. None of the Small Rocks managers made any transfers right when the post-draft, pre-season transfer window opened at 2:47 AM EDT this morning.

Sir Granpa Hal was up all night with the Aviators Board of Directors pondering over when to move for Drogba. Key to the move was getting a good 4.5 midfielder. The Board gave the go ahead before someone else swooped up ex-Scouser, Manchester City's DMid Hamann.

Joe Cole thought something was up when he couldn't find his locker. In the end, the crowded Chelsea midfield gave way to the big target man who only has a slight thigh knock and shouldn't be out too long.

Drogba had a medical by the Aviators physio at 4 AM this morning and passed with flying colors. He could even play this weekend, although the physio recommended giving it another week to heal and get in a little fitness training.

Accordingly, the Aviators Board of Directors announce the following player moves:

OUT:
Distin POR Def 5.5
Beattie WBA Fwd 5.0
Joe Cole CHE Mid 9.0

IN:
Hamann Man City Mid 4.5
Mendy Hull City Def 4.0
Drogba CHE Fwd 11.0

Bold move Hal. BOLD. Will this be the 200 point Drogba? Or the 80 point version?

Besides, it helps cement J Cole's place as the player "Most Transfered In and then Out."

Small Rocks – 2008/2009
Draft and Post-Draft Analysis

Opinions are like certain body-parts, everyone has one. That said, here is my opinion. Please note, besides the normal bias that I will have for certain players, I also have a bias for (really against) Tottenham, Everton and Manchester City. I really do not know how these teams are going to react to the changes that have occurred.

In Draft Order:

I think it was Andre that said the draft went pretty much as could be expected. Paul is proof that several made choices that were quite different that what could be expected. Given a chance to go Cech/Carvalho in rounds 2 and 3, “normal” for Paul, he went Yakubu and Alves. Those picks could decide Paul’s fate. I am not a big fan, and who knows about Jo, but going so quickly for those two impacted the rest of Paul’s draft. Very good midfield, assuming Cahill comes back strong. Neville looked good in the Cup, but others think Brown. For the 10th round it was a great pick. Solid in Goal. I am afraid it will be another fight to avoid relegation.

Barbatov, Fabregas, and maybe the best “Name” defense I have ever seen put together. Needs to hope I am wrong about Manchester City, and there are a couple stretches, like Duff (where did that come from?) and Nasri, new guy, but I am giving credit for a solid Elano and Nani getting more playing time. Figure the other two forward positions will be a revolving door. Should be right there.

It’s all in the Forward Line. Torres and Santa Cruz were both close to 200 last year, and Drogba has done 200. His only problem may be deciding which to name captain. Had to give somewhere, so the middies are light, but got the two highest scoring defenders from last year for his money, so that makes up for and otherwise nameless defense. Two top goalies will make for great points from that spot. Also pre-positioned for a late arriving Big Name, as in dump Drog and get Robinho. My pick to take it.

“Ronaldo and Several Questions” is the name of this group. I can make the case for the Ronaldo pick. Add some pretty good defenders and in goal, and you have a nice team waiting to see if Couch/Ashton/Modric/Martins/Sidwell produce. Ashton has looked so good on the pre-season stat sheet that he had to be high on most lists, certainly mine. How many minutes this year? Couch with some playing time will do ????????. Modric is a new guy so ???? and on we go. The defense should be top notch. Manager will have to adapt to others, beside Coach Wiggum, who are real quick to swoop on FPL talent. Several questions, but remember, Ronaldo almost signal handily saved my sleeping Brother last year!

Another who changed his “normal” draft process. All in all I like the group, especially getting Adebayor, who I had rank much higher than others who passed on him early. Need Downing to have another great year and Bullard with a whole year could be 150+. Shy of “Names” on defense, but Scharner lead his team in goals, albeit a weak scoring team, and Luke could like this “go for goal” environment at AV. Middle of the pack looking to steal some points from the 3rd forward and 4th middie. But remember, I used my Get out of Jail Free Card right after week 1 last year, so who knows.

A really solid defense/goal, add Tevez, who is a personal favorite, and a seemingly more settle Barry make for a good core. Not a big Carew fan, but that opinion cost me last year and could again this. Eboue seems to be a Wenger experiment who will have to do more as a middie, whereas last year he benefitted from defender status. I have gotten used to the last minute player transfer each week, generally bringing in the guy I liked but just couldn’t pull the trigger on, and watching the guy beat me over the head. Solid core just made for such an approach.

The Jones Family really like their Forwards. This is a great bunch, with the hope that Rooney gets more time, and Van Persie gets a lot more time. I am not knowledgeable enough to have picked up Keane last year, so why try this year, I guess. Anyway, great bunch. Ballack is not a favorite, but he did come on late, given Frankie’s absence. Frankie is back, so who gets to be the late arriving guy just behind the forwards? Defense is very strong as it appears Dossena is one of the chosen. Another who regularly out transfers me, so again, with this core and a couple solid moves it should be another year at or near the top.

Michel chose the path less taken. Always one round ahead of where I had the guys he picked. Young, Bentley, Bent and Defoe was masterful. After that he lost me. Deco/Kuyt/Faubert are open questions to me. Not much on defense after Gallas, although Wheater came on late last year. Green is an unhappy keeper, and Gomes is new, so it was hard to give much there. I know that the draft is just a jumping off point for Michel, but I think it will take all his talents to make this group into a contender or even middle of the pack. But think of it this way. Sweating the draft ….. touring Europe? Screw the draft!

My opinion only.

Good take on how I look at the draft:

Going last, I was as good as a round behind some so my 'top picks' had to be 'a round ahead', or else I would never get them.

;)

Indeed, a lot will be resting on Young, Bentley, Bent and Defoe - the rest (apart fropm perhaps Gallas) will be contenders for the first week's use of the wildcard.

:D

Can't argue with any of that. I used my WC first week last year as well, and it was huge in fixing a few errors I made during the draft.
