Not trying to piss in your cheerios, but Switzerland is not a good side at all, and no one outside Canada rates the Gold Cup as anything more than a collection of friendlies. Personally I'd love to see Canada qualify for 2006 along with the US just because it would piss off Latin America, but I don't see Canada making it unless the CUSL starts before 2004.

The Swiss are "not a good side at all"? Recent performances would suggest otherwise.

I cautioned people not to read too much into Canada's win over the Swiss, so in the same way I would caution people not to read too much into the result against Scotland. Especially if the topic here is World Cup qualifying starting in 2004. Most Canucks actually more optimistic following the loss to Scotland than following the win against the Swiss. Why? Because of the quality of our play. That's two matches in a row where we've looked good - and at times dominant - against decent European sides on their home turf, using very youthful squads (especially against the Scots, in what was probably our youngest starting roster for a "A" squad ever). Its tough to get too concerned about losing 3-1 to Scotland when the loss is largely down to an aging 33-year old 3rd-string defender, who was only playing because the match was at his home park, wasn't likely to play for Canada again anyway & is definitely not going to be around in 2 years time when qualifying starts.

Yes, we are all aware that the absence of a pro-league will make it unnecessarily difficult for Canada, but not impossible. Outside of injuries & suspensions testing our depth (particularly at the striker position), Canada's main problem will be getting together sufficient preparation time for each World Cup qualifying match, to enable the maximum amount of cohesion. Our quantity isn't where we'd like it to be minus a full pro-league, but based upon the quality of players available to each nation in Concacaf there's no question that Canada should contend for a spot for 2006.

Actually, Canada didn't have "all their best players" for either of the last two Gold Cups. In fact we won the 2002 Gold Cup final match with about 6 probable starters injured. I realize a few other teams in Concacaf didn't either (moreso out of choice, as opposed to Canada whereby it was largely through injuries & other factors), but it does indicate that we do have a little depth.

The striker position is the area for the most concern in terms of depth. As strikers go, De Rosario & Radzinski are as nice a tandem as any Concacaf team can put out & there are some nice strikers coming up through the ranks (the youth teams seem to be producing more strikers than defenders these days - or maybe its because Canada has become attack-minded in the past couple of years for the first time in our history). However when Radz doesn't want to play & if either are injured our replacement options at the moment aren't quite at the same level. Hopefully that will change in 2 years with the emergence of some younger players, but it would be nice to have more experience at a high level up front.

Oops! Make that the 2000 Gold Cup final match, rather than 2002.

Within a confederation, I just look at the placings in the confed, and don't worry about the overall placings or how many points each team has. So I see the confederation rankings as:

1 Mexico
2 United States
3 Costa Rica
4 Honduras
5 Trinidad and Tobago
6 Jamaica
7 Canada
8 tie Cuba
8 tie Haiti
10 Guatemala
11 El Salvador
12 Barbados
13 St. Kitts and Nevis
14 St. Lucia
15 Panama
16 Grenada
17 Surinam
18 St. Vincent and the Grenadines
19 Dominican Republic
20 Antigua and Barbuda
21 Belize
22 British Virgin Islands
23 Cayman Islands
24 Guyana
25 Bermuda
26 Dominica
27 Netherlands Antilles
28 Nicaragua
29 Bahamas
30 Aruba
31 Anguilla
32 US Virgin Islands
33 Puerto Rico
34 Turks and Caicos Islands
35 Montserrat

With the Addition of Afganistan, we no longer have the lowest rated team. Maybe we can get a Montserrat-Afgan game!

Afghanistan will probably move ahead of Montserrat after their three games in the SAFF Cup (in Bangladesh). So, CONCACAF will yet again have the lowest rated team.

OK, Sid, I'll finally ask. Just WHAT IS your motivation in posting these every month? You give no analysis of the rankings, or if any teams raise or lower in the Concacaf-only rankings. What's up?

I think he does it just to let people know that they are out there and to make them available for perusal. I'm glad he does it, because it never occurs to me to look it up.

Nicodemus, answered the question for me I just thought it was something the users of this board might like. If you guys want me to stop just let me know and I won't post the new rankings when they come out in Febuary.

Nah, looking at the rankings are good. And despite some flaws in them I think they are pretty indicative of overall form in the past 4 years.
