Hi there,

I figured this was a good place to open this discussion up. I was wondering if anyone here had any insight as to what to expect for MLS related employment?

I may have the opportunity to join a club on the business operations end of things and was curious if anybody new anything (good or bad) that I should expect in terms of the work environment, salary or expectations of clubs in MLS?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Cheers,

DJPuma,

I am not even in the sports, let alone soccer industry, but through some friends on the west coast of the US and a shared love of the game and one brutal golf game I have landed a sit down with one of the Directors of Business for a club. Completely took me by surprise and was totally accidental.

If anything comes of it I will pass on the "How to?"

-Cheers-

I am very impressed! Good luck and please tell me how it goes.
I'd relocate for football!

Hi,

I'm actually taking a Sports Management masters degree program in University of San Francisco and in this kind of program, they will provide you with all the connections they have with the industry. As a matter of fact, most of the students who love soccer ended up working with MLS teams, World cup events, and european clubs. They have a mandatory intership program that requires students to work in the industry. I know at least 3 who worked at Los Angeles Galaxy, 3 at San Jose Earthquakes, and 1 at FC Barcelona.

Let me know if you have any more questions :) Cheers...

I got my BS from Ball State in Sports Admin and we had to have an internship. I landed one in DC and had a fantastic time working in the Operations department. After I graduated, I went to Denver and found the Rapids had an opening for an Account Executive. I was leaving the next day but my future boss called DC, talked to them and offered me the job. It pays to do the internship and to bust your tail. I loved it and if you want to further the progress of our beautiful game, go for it! Good luck. If you have any questions, please IM me and I'll answer what I can.

Cheers!

:D

So is school the way to go?
Or is it possible to get an internship in other ways?
Offer to work for free, volunteer, etc.
It would be my dream to work in PR/marketing for a team/organization ...

Most times they offer the internships for students because they get credit for the work. You can volunteer, but that could take a while to get noticed or put in situations where you can really show your talents. The internship allows you to see the inside of the team from all aspects and shows you where you think you might want to work. You get to interact with everyone from Account Executives to the GM, to the team itself. I had the opportunity to be the visiting team liasion and meet the teams coming in as well as took DC United to the airport and all sorts of things. Internship through school is the best way to go.

So grad school is probably a good option then?
Anyone know anything about Sports Management Worldwide?
Not sure if that is a scam or not ...
Thanks for the information!

Grad school would be best...I looked at SMW and it just seems like it cheapens the whole deal. School opens up the doors a little easier for you. UMass is good, along with a host of others...decide what you want to do and go get it!

Ahh, so hard! But you're right. I think that's probably the best way to go.
I appreciate the advice.

You could get the intern or even a full time job for that matter in a sports industry without college. But there are a lot of advantages in you getting through the education system. The program will open a lot of doors of opportunity that would otherwise be very hard to get. Also you will get expert advice from faculty members who are very knowledgeable about the industry you chose to specialize.

When you apply for an internship and they see that you are pursuing a sports management degree, the employer would more likely chose you over the rest because at least they know that you are serious about pursuing a career in the industry and will more likely than not be a better talent for the position.

Thanks guys ... this really helps.
Still not sure about school, but I am going to investigate.
I feel I may be too old to make a switch, but why not try right?
I love the game, I am passionate and I have nothing to hold me back.
Thanks again!

My pleasure. I'm sure we'll meet in the future should you decide you want to plunge into the industry.

For California Students. I'd look into USF Grad.Program don't be fool by other wannabe local programs who are caught up or drowning in school politics Cough Cough... SJSU... Trust me I know 2 years wasted really depressing.. I'd also look into Long Beach State... futsalrepublic consider yourself a wise man for selecting the correct school.

Haha.. well thanks for reassuring my decision. So what did you ended up doing upon graduation? Did you end up in the sports industry?
