No matter what anyone says you can buy success, look at Real Madrid for example. Chelsea are now the richest club in Europe, and although they are far from the biggest, they will soon be up there with the best. I am surprised when people say that their players will need time to gel and they are not a force yet. Great players will play great football and Cheslea now have the best squad in the premiership and are real contenders. I think that any big club Abramovich would have brought would be contenders both domestically and in europe. Basically, money DOES buy success.

Real Madrid won CL in 1998 and 2000,before they signed Zidane,Figo anc co.
Besides, there are teams like Barcelona or Inter Milano that have spent a lot of money in last seasons and they haven't won anything.
So I think the equation is
No money equals no success
money does not equal success

Money does equal success. Compared to teams with less cash inter milan and barcelona have done well. Look at abarcelona in the champions leagure!! Success isnt always just winning trophies, but good cup runs, doing well in the league...

So I would say that the revival in their season sarted with a new coach, who I don't remember spending any money at all.

Success isn't about winning trophies for all teams. With all due respect I'm sure a team like Southampton would have taken a good league position and a run to the the Cup Final last season. But success for the likes of Barcelona and Inter is ENTIRELY about winning trophies, not just good cup runs.

An example outside of soccer:

Yankees + Money = Success.

It works in almost any sport.

Try again, genius.
Mets + Money=Last place.
A's + No Money=Playoffs for 3rd year in a row.

Money will always help a club win more ... but it ultimately comes down to scouting talent and having the right personnel to develope talent. Coaching is more important than people tend to remember.

If you spend a lot of money poorly, you can screw yourself. Have a lot of money to spend and people who understand how to spend it, and you can dominate for years on end.

Having money makes it much easier to win, but it doesn't assure anything. However, to maintain success, money is a must. Poor clubs have good years, but almost none can consistently maintain them.

I suppose if the owner and people running the team have intelligence it generally leads to better purchases and getting more for your money. That said, I can't stand the Mets.
