Ronaldo is now the Prem's top scorer. Crap season.

To be honest you have to question the striking quality of this league, he is top with what 17 goals with 5 games remaining (4 overall), so we will have a top scorer who will probably not hit 20 goals in the league season.
What is lowest goals record for the top scorer ?

18 in both 97-98 and 98-99.

Don't think it has to do with the quality of the striking, as much as the goals are spread around in the Prem.

Its a mixed bag, the Prem is littered with shit strikers, while the top 4 hoard the good ones.

There have just been less goals in the prem this season

the goals have been spread around though

Yea, it's probably because teams 5-12 in the EPL have improved a lot. Teams 12-20 are still shite, but are less shite.

Also the emphasis on defense has increased, either teams got better defensively (by playing more cautious) or have employed better defenders.

Did some quick number crunching and here's what I came up with.

05/06 PL teams on average scored 1.24 goals per game. (led by 27 from Henry, 21 from Nistelrooy, and 18 from Bent)
06/07 averaged 1.23 GPG. (led by 20 from Drogba, 18 from McCarthy, and 17 from Christiano)
07/08 averaged 1.32 GPG (led by 31 from Ronaldo and 24 from both Abedayor and Torres)
Current season is averaging 1.23 GPG (led by 17 from Ronaldo, 15 from Anelka (when was the last time this guy scored a domestic goal???), and Gerrard, Robinho, and Torres tied for 13)

15 from Anelka (when was the last time this guy scored a domestic goal???)Was thinking the same myself yesterday after I noticed Ronaldo had gone top (he is having such a terrible season). He scored a goal vs. Villa in February, and apart from that his last league goal came on December 14th, 2008 in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. He has picked up a hat-trick vs. Watford and a single goal vs. Southend in the FA Cup i nthe meantime.

They put him back on the wing.

Actual #9 standards across football have decreased dramatically over the last few years. It's definitely not just the PL.

There's nothing to actually hoard - we don't even have a #9 in our immediate team selections outside of a kid from the reserves.

Werent there two assists for Rooney against Spurs, one for Ronaldo's goal and the other for Berba's ?

Why should Rooney get both assists? Berbatov had to fight to get the rebound and then score.

lol, true.

I'm not thinking at all. I didn't even jog the second 'assist' through my mind..

off to re-edit.

Syed, johno hates you, apparently. :D

No, I just wanted us to be able to go back and say that this is the absolutely stingiest possible account of goals and assists years down the road.

That is like saying why it is an assist if someone takes another touch after a through ball, I thought it was an assist, Rooney did most the work there, Lazytoff should have put it in first time, not Rooney fault. ;)

So you wont give him an assist last week, well he gets one this week, take that you haters.

Is this Rooney's best season or the one with 23 goals and 10-12 assist better than this (the year before last season) ?

Our resident holding midfielder has as much prem goals as Tevez by the way and Kiko is just one behind.
