Gerr18......you dont have to try out for a region in the state......that is only in certain states....here in NC(or in the past anyways) you just go to a certain location(assuming you sent in your releases, money, etc. on time) and tryout. They then cut you if you are not good enough. If you did not get cut, you go to another tryout...then after the 3rd tryout the pool is announced....

They eventually pick a regional team out of the state teams....then the regional players try out for the national team, and out of the national pool the olympic players are chosen...to answer your question....

I'm just talking from personal experience. We had to tryout for region in state...upper, middle, and lower state. Then so on...

Again about odp: So how many actually good players are represented in ODP. I mean. how vast is the realm of players to choose between for the national team?

I'm currently about to start Div 2 college soccer and thinking about PDL after the season.

I played ODP Europe a while back. that was a lot of fun. ODP itself is a great experience, but getting into ODP sucks. Imagine going against hundreds of other players that play your position and the coach is only going to take 2, maybe 3 of you guys. Plus, in California it's very politcal. If you weren't on the team last year or if the coach doesn't know you personally, you won't make the squad. Lui Balboa was my club coach, father of Marcelo, and a very influential coach here but could never get me on the ODP team, the coaching staff kept saying "We got two keepers from last year." I don't suck, especially no to those two keepers.

Played at the highest level in scotland now for four years. Its called the pro youth and its just the youth version of the SPL(Scottish premier League, Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen etc, eqiuvelant of the mls in America). Been playin in it since under thirteens up to under seventies which is the age group im playin in at the moment(well unattached since about a month ago but will probs sign for another club soon since iv been with three different clubs throughout the four yrs).Havent been paid yet because you have to sign the pro contract and leave school, and it is only available after under sixteens and up. Aint been offered it yet but time is on my side as im only sixteen.

My rec league has an A and a B division. I once played in an A game when they were short of players. Damn they are fast. That was my moment of glory.

My rec leagues tend to have 3 levels, B, A, and "Competitive". They go in that order. B is sort of the "anyone can play, but they're still decent" league, A is anyone can play, but there's some teams that take it pretty serious, and Competitive is not just anyone can play and get away with it. It's not college level or anything (there's no sliding, indoor or out) but it's certainly intense and the skills are definately there. I play in all three, but most of my time is spent in Competitive. Believe it or not, A and B are more fun, probably because the games don't "mean" as much...you just get some good football in.

4 years NCAA Div 3 College Ball. I am proud to say I was first team all-conference keeper my senior year and honorable mention All-American (1995).

I was really sick and tired of the game after college and didn't touch a ball for three years (my colle coach was an a-hole). Then my love for the game returned and now I play on three teams here in the Portland area.

I was invited to try out for the Portland Timbers last year. What a fantastic experience. I actually made it through several rounds of cuts but was eventually let go (the GK coach asked me why I waited until I was 30 to tryout for my first pro team...lol). It was still great to play at that level for even a brief period.

I kicked the ball around in Colorado Springs. It is the "real" mile high city, so it was a pretty high level.

couple games with RLDF (Royal Lesotho Defense Force) in Lesotho's 1st division. Sucks losing your amateur status when you are only paid in Castle lager, spinach and dagga.

I guess pick-up games in a vacant lot in Ankara, Turkey, count as 'recreational'?
