Jol has to put it all together first.

I'm not trembling in my boots just yet, but I have do doubt it will eventually get to that point.

A day has passed and I'm still thrilled by all this news.

Just like club president Hoffmann put it, they have managed to ensure and hopefully even improve the quality of the squad for the long term through smart moves on the market, even if not all of those newcomers fully live up to expectations.

Earlier this summer I was resigned to the fact that we would have no money to spend this summer and lose van der Vaart without profit after the season.

Jansen is a smart, self-confident player with an energetic style of play and he's a German national team player. I assume they also bought him hoping he can become a real "club symbol". If he performs up to potential, he certainly can.

Dude, I spent the last year over at the Bayern sub-forum defending Marcell Jansen.

I will ask you to do what the Bayern fans and the club would not do.

BE PATIENT WITH HIM!!

The kid still has some developing to do. He will make mistakes and at times, he'll look like he doesn't know what's going on.

But be patient with him and I believe you guys will be rewarded.

Impressed with the moves that HSV have made, even if they don't get Neves. Losing van der Vaart and Kompany looked like it could make for a rough season, but things are looking a lot brighter after just a couple of moves.

Thiago Neves to HSV is now official!

Just confirmed on the website of his former club Fluminense.

Manchester City couldn't sign him due to the British immigration law (requirement to be a regular national team player - not so easy for Brazilian creative midfielders...), and Atlético Madrid had made a final offer last week which Hamburg management outbid. No idea why the whole German press went for those non-sense rumours from Spanish Marca earlier today.

The player will travel to Hamburg today.

I think Jansen can actually become a world class LWB, this is one of my big guesses I have made. Lets see in a few years how it goes.

amazing news, this guy would be the perfect replacement for van der vaart, not as skilled tho but with time he can be i think, and he's only 23.

Not as good? We'll see about that. He is the complete package IMO, and this is coming from someone who despise him and is a fan of his former team's rival.

HSV should be competing for the title this year in Germany with Thiago Neves and Alex Silva, although I do believe they paid a hefty price for Alex.

6.5 mio € doesn't seem that hefty compared to 8 mio for Henrique or 12 mio for Breno, though the 50% of the transfer rights might be worth a lot if he makes it. Of course I have no way of comparing the players.

About both Thiago Neves and Alex Silva it should be said that Brazilians often have some adjustment problems when coming new into the league. The style of play and speed is different, and of course the climate is different - almost every South American in the Bundesliga complains about the cold weather at some point. And if I remember right, HSV doesn't have a lot of experience with South Americans new to the continent, they usually buy Eastern Europeans or Dutch players. We'll have to wait and see how fast they can adjust and if they really can reach the level they had in Brazil in Hamburg, they wouldn't be the first to fail to live up to the expactations: see among others Leverkusens Franca (might have had a decent 2nd season, but was never as great as promised), Werders Carlos Alberto, Hethas Andre Lima, Frankfurts Caio (so far), Bayerns Breno (so far), Schalkes Zé Roberto (so far).

I don't think you can say HSV "usually buys Eastern European players" unless you really want to throw Jarolim and Petric (who were bought as Bundesliga players) into that category.

Beiersdorfer now confirmed the Neves transfer as well.

Petric not playing against Bielefeld, Pitroipa is starting.

Hamburg has worked pretty well for South Americans lately. Guerrero is starting, Sorin was playing well, fit in, but was injured too often. Cardoso and Romeo were key players on offense for quite some time.

It's no guarantee that Silva and Neves will play well, but the team isn't without experience in that regard.

Very slow start into the game, perhaps the team was dreaming of the championship already...

Jansen still does need a bit of time.

Excellent comeback by HSV though!

The commentator said that it was the first time in 9(!) years that Hamburg went on to win a game in which they were 2 goals down.

I'm scared of this team.

yea not as good right now.
VDV is imo the BEST playmaker in the world.
Neves still is young and has some development to do.

Just got to watch some Olympic football today...Alex Silva and Thiago Neves, they really are both quality players. Neves looks older than 23 though.

Interestingly, 4 regular starters and 1 of the primary substitutes of the Brazilian olympic team now ply their trade in the Bundesliga, that's not bad at all and I'm sure Rafinha and Diego were "interviewed" on the Bundesliga (and on weather in Germany) by our new guys.

On the game vs. Arminia...I think Petric needs to work harder if he wants to play regularly.

It pains me to say this, but "congrats" on the signing of Thiago Neves. I hope the Hamburg fans receive him well. I knew eventually he would go after his performances in the Copa Libertadores. Check out the final where he became the first person ever to score a hat trick in a final. If he would've scored from the penalty area that would've made it four in one game.

van der Vaart isn't a playmaker though ;)
When it comes to playmaking, VDV wasn't even the best in der Bundesliga, Diego beats him easily in that regard. In the last few years, he was more of a forward, sometimes initiating things, but mostly going to the net to finish, not to set up people.

I wouldn't expect Neves to have the same impact as VDV in the near future, that would be too much to ask. But then again, Hamburg under Jol is not Hamburg under Doll or Stevens. An offensive game which doesn't focus on only one player should be more helpful to get used to than being the focal point and having to carry the game from the get go.
