I don't know if Hamburg is content letting this deal go. I think that they really don't have the money. Don't forget that they just signed Elia. He was expensive enough already and I think that it was a great signing.

There are not many teams in Germany that can afford €20m+ on transfer fees alone.

Although I'd love to see someone like Berg in the Bundesliga. Should Huntelaar choose not to go to Stuttgart, I hope that we sign Berg instead, now that Hamburg is out of the picture...

I'm sure there could be a way of generating that money, whether that is to sell a player or two and adding the rest. Sometimes clubs just have to go that extra mile to get a player they really want and would improve the team in the long run.

I wouldn't trust the press right now. Between the Swedish, Dutch and German press you can find articles that claim the deal is close to getting done and not on the table anymore. Both sides have claimed that for days now, neither of them were right.

Hamburg definately isn't out of the picture, they negotiated the last few days and are negotiating again today.

HSV hands down win the trophy for the smartest Bundesliga transfers over the last 4-5 years imo.

For whatever reason they still got rid of Beiersdorfer.... but apparently they've got it in them without him as well.

Yea they sure as hell make some amazing transfers but they can't seem to hold on to them or make it count, lol.

HSV had plenty of cash left from selling de Jong and Neves.

Btw, the market is hardly inflated this summer except in the price range of ManCity and Real Madrid, there is very little buying and selling this year, check transfermarkt.de. Although of course things would be easier if a few high-profile transfers hadn't inflated expectations.

Too bad van der Vaart warmed to the idea of returning to Hamburg so late. Perhaps next year.

Very true, I didn't think about that...

I don't know about that. Can you imagine paying €12m on someone like Berg last year? Someone who's had two above average seasons in Holland and one good youth tournament? transfermarkt.de values him at about €8m, which I think is what he'd have cost last year. This week, Hamburg paid 50% more than that...
Again, I still think that he's a good signing, but the market is definitely inflated, because all the money that Madrid, City, et al are throwing around is eventually handed down to smaller clubs, driving prices up everywhere...

Depends on what he'll do this year.

I continue to agree with a quote by Hoeness recently who also said that on the whole the market is definitely short on cash this year. We're in an economic crisis after all. Just compare market volume for the Premiership and La Liga with two summers ago, take out ManCity and Madrid or leave them in if you want. As for Madrid, you certainly know that they'll be dumping a lot of quality players on the market at very reasonable prices now... Secondly, by their own admittance (I don't have the exact quote at hand) they're investing heavily this year and were able to get Kaka and Ronaldo partly BECAUSE the economic crisis was bringing Milan and ManU to the negotiating table.

Berg is just an individual case. I don't think his price is 12m and I don't think the 8m valuation was factoring in his tournament performance. I'm sure the actual transfer fee will be dependent on his personal or on Hamburg's overall success next year.

um, did you know that Berg broke a record right? No one had scored 7 goals in that tournament before, and not many has scored 7 goals in 4 games in any international tournament in history. Berg is a great talent.

I never said that Berg wasn't a great talent. I think it was a great move by Hamburg to sign him. All I'm saying is that even a year ago, a 22 year old Swede who had scored 17 goals in the Dutch league and 7 at a youth tournament wouldn't have cost €12m.

That's not to say he isn't worth it. It's just an example of how the prices have gone up.

I checked groningens forum, and their fans arent happy about the price. They thought he was worth atleast 15million euro.

They are right to be outraged, given his record I'd expect at least 15 million.

Again, great buy by Hamburg. Well negotiated.

That shows how delirious their fans are. I agree with benztown here.

I think people should remember the Dutch League isn't what it used to be either.......

However, Berg joined the right club. With HSV, he'll have the support to put up goals.

No excuses.
